"FIVE!"...why has everything changed?...

"FOUR!"...why couldn't summer just go as planned?...

"THREE!"...why couldn't everything just be okay?...

"TWO!"...do I even need to ask myself that?...

"ONE!"...the answer is no, no I do not.

I glance to my right to the see the faces of my best friends, smiling in unison as the sky fills with light and blooms with sparkly, astonishing colours. Endless fireworks; bursts of explosions mixed with laughter and encouraging screams from the surrounding crowd.

An outsider looking in would see a group of best friends, enjoying their final summer before heading off to college.

An outsider would never know the journey we took to get to here. The lies and the people that got hurt.

But we are the insiders...and we know differently.

*Beep* *beep* *beep* *be-* my hand comes crashing down to silence the dull sounds of my alarm clock and I roll over to face my window. Sunlight; beautiful and uninterrupted. No clouds, just a sea of blue. I throw my blanket off with much more enthusiasm than on a normal school day. Summer of Senior Year. The end to our high school lives and the start of our final summer together. I practically leap over to my desk, rip my charger out of my phone and check my messages.

The typically noisy group chat between me and my friends is even livelier today. I scroll through the messages, finally reaching the most recent one from Elijah,

*GUYS, ARE WE READY?!?! FINAL WEEK IS HERE!!!*

Trust Elijah to be this hyper at six a.m.

I roll my eyes but can't hide my smile as I frantically type my response,

*Do you even need to ask that?! Of course!!!*

As I place my phone on my desk and stroll over to my closet, I ignore the persistent vibrations of my cell phone against my wooden desk. Picking out a pink cotton skirt and white t-shirt, I dress for the weather; pairing my outfit with white, flat sandals and my small pink backpack. I shoot a quick glance toward my suitcase, waiting by the door and silently curse myself - it's going to be a nightmare trying to carry that down the stairs. A wonderful trait I have inherited from my mother, always pack for an extra two weeks, just in case.

As I flit around my room checking I have everything before I head downstairs, my phone rings. I see that it's Piper and quickly answer, "Hey P!," I say with a huge grin.

"Hey Ev, you ready to go soon? We need to swing by a Starbucks on our way into school, okay? I need coffee. I was accidentally up all night watching the Vampire Diaries...again" she jokes.

"Yes, just give me ten minutes and I'll be ready," I say whilst placing the last few things into my backpack.

"Is Beth coming with us?" I ask.

"Yeah, she said she'll be ready soon, too. I'll go get her, then come for you. Be ready!" she dismisses me and hangs up. I do love Piper, but my God is she bossy.

I quickly head into my bathroom, wash my face, brush my teeth and quickly apply lip gloss and mascara.

I grab my phone and keys, throwing them into my backpack, fling it over my shoulder and dash downstairs to find my dad and brother wolfing down huge stacks of pancakes.

"Morning Ev!" my dad chimes, as I open the fridge grabbing a bottled water and an apple.

"Morning Dad. Morning Tyler," my brother looks up from his pancakes, mumbling something along the lines of "morning Ev" muffled through a mouthful of pancake.
