“It’s not going to be alright if he’s gone,” Betty said stubbornly, “I can’t live without him.”

“You won’t have to because he’ll be fine, I know he will be.”

Betty just shook her head. When there was some rustling in the trees, everyone leaped up on high alert. FP walked out of the forest slowly, carrying what looked to be Jughead’s bloody limp body. Betty wasn’t a doctor, but she could tell he wasn’t breathing.

“NO!” She cried, “No no no! He can’t be dead! He c-c-can‘t be.” She tried to get to him but Archie held her back and held her into his chest. She fought him, “Let me go! I need to be with him.”

“No, Betty, you don’t need to see that.” Betty cried but stopped struggling. FP said nothing. He just drove away with Jughead on his lap, speeding as fast as he could to the hospital.

In the hospital waiting room, Betty had calmed down. She was sitting there, her face tear-streaked and miserable.

“If he dies, Arch, I’m throwing myself off a building.”

“Betty. Please don’t say things like that.”

“I’m telling you the truth so you don’t have to hear it from the News or something.”

“Stop. That is not what Jughead would have wanted.”

“You’re talking as if he’s already dead.”

“I’m trying to prepare you in case he is. But Betty, think about your parents-”

“Right, let me go be worried about the serial killer and the woman who sent me away because she thought I was crazy. Now I can prove to them that I actually am.”

“What about me and Veronica, huh? You’re our best friend, we could never be happy without you.”

“But Archie,” she whispered, “How can I be happy without him? How could he do this to me? He sacrificed himself for the Serpents, he wasn’t thinking about anyone else while he made that decision. Why should I always have to think about everyone else?”

“Elizabeth Cooper, the world would much worse off without you in it.”

She just sat there in silence.

Those of you here for Forsythe Jones can see him now, he’s unconscious but if you wanted to see him before surgery, now would be the time, and if the unthinkable does happen, you may want to take now to say your goodbyes. Betty, Archie, FP, Toni, Sweet Pea, and Fangs all crowded into the hospital room. After a few minutes of bowed heads, the Serpents and Archie left.

“Mr. Jones, this is rude and selfish of me, but would you mind giving me just a minute alone with him?”

“Of course, Betty.” He left too.

“Oh Juggie, you can’t leave me in this place by myself. I don’t want to live in a world without you in it. I don’t want to tell you this but I relapsed. When we saw your body, I dug my hands so hard into my palms that the scars opened and I bled. I’m sorry, I know you wanted me to stop. I tried. I hope you wake up. I need you to wake up. I love you.”

Meanwhile, Archie sat next to FP in the waiting area.

“Mr. Jones, I don’t want to bother you with this, especially now, but I’m worried about Betty. She’s spouting all of this nonsense about killing herself if Jug dies.”
