Taking Chances

Chapter 8

I push open the door to my house and walk inside. I wipe away the fresh tears that had fallen on my walk home. I kick off my shoes and look towards the living room. I see Sylvia sitting on the couch with her head in her hands and Chloe squatting in front of her. I close the door as quietly as possible but, they both hear it and look my way.

"You." I hear Chloe sneer. She gets up and walks straight over to me standing in my way to go upstairs. I don't say anything.

"It's your fault." She says. I look up at her to see her disgusted expression.

"How is it my fault?" I whisper.

"It's your fault he left." She says. I try to ignore her and walk into the living room. Chloe has other plans because she gets in my way making sure i cant go anywhere.

"No, your going to listen to me." She says angrily. Why isn't Sylvia doing anything? She's always let Chloe treat me like a piece of dirt.

"He left because he couldn't deal with you. You were so horrible." She lies.

"That's not true." I say quietly.

"What did you just say?" She questions.

"I said that's not true!" I yell at her.

I see Chloe's hand come flying and slap me across the face. I push her out of the way and run up the steps. I hear her running up the stairs after me. I reach my room slam the door shut and lock it. Why doesn't Sylvia do anything? She's supposed to be my mother or at least my step-mother. Things weren't always like this between Chloe and i we used to actually act like sisters.

*Flashback 7 years ago*

"What are they talking about?" I ask quietly as Chloe pokes her head out of the bedroom door trying to hear what mom and dad are saying.

"I think he's saying-" She gets cut off by glass smashing. Suddenly someone comes running up the stairs and Chloe runs away from the door. Dad bursts into the room and goes right over to Chloe.

"Come here." He says. He pulls her out of the room and brings her downstairs. After about five minutes of hushed conversation i hear, "Alice, come down here."

I retreat from the bedroom and slowly make my way downstairs. I come to the bottom step to see my dad and my mom standing there glaring at each other with Chloe sitting on the couch crying.

"Sit down." My mom orders. I sit down next to my sobbing eleven year old sister Chloe.

"What's the matter?" I ask.

"What's the matter is that your mother died today and your father here," She pauses to point to my dad, "Finally told me that he was going to leave me for her!" She screams at me. In this situation being a ten year old little girl i don't understand what shes talking about.

"But, your not dead." I say to my mom.

"I'm not your mother! I'd never want to be your mother your a disgusting excuse for a daughter." She yells.That sets my dad off.

"Don't talk to her like that, Sylvia! This is why I'm leaving you because your a horrible woman! Alice, go get your things we're leaving." My dad says.I nod my head and start to go upstairs but, someone stops me.

"If you take her I'm calling the cops.'' Sylvia threatens.

"What are you going to tell them? That your ex-husband is taking his daughter to a more stable home?" My dad challenges.

"No, i'll tell them your stealing my daughter." She says.

"She isn't your daughter she's mine." He protests.

"They wont know that." Sylvia says.

"Alice, go upstairs." He orders. I do as I'm told and go upstairs sitting on the floor listening to them screaming and Chloe Sobbing loudly.

*Present*

That was the last time i ever saw my father. I never knew where he went although, i guess he was in New York City. Considering that's where he was shot for trying to rob one of the banks. I had found out my real mother had died from complications with a pregnancy. My real mother had been pregnant with a possible little brother or sister. It didn't matter if they weren't my fathers children because they would be my siblings. But, now ill never have a real sibling because I'm stuck with Chloe and Sylvia with no family to go to since both my real parents are dead.
