Chapter 14:
"Smile!" The girl laughed, positioning her camera in front of her family members.
Her dad tightened his arm around his wife and squeezed one of his sons shoulders, "We are."
With a click, the flash set off and captured a photo of the happy family. The girl smiled down at the photo. It was her passion, and one day she had hoped to become a professional photographer, taking pictures of beautiful landscapes or amazingly gorgeous female and male models.
The girl suddenly frowned. Her eyes staring deeply into the picture and what had appeared in the background.
Her brother, Jack, came up to her and took the camera from her hands, "Let me see," he said, looking down at the photo. He lifted his head, "That's a good photo, Becca."
The frown upon the girls face slowly lifted, she nodded her head in agreement. "But, look in the far left hand corner. Someone ruined the photo." She pouted, crossing her arms like a child.
Jack shook his head laughing and using the zoom button on the camera, he zoomed in on the figure. Jason, her other brother, scooted closer to watch.
The figure became clear after the camera reloaded the zoomed in section. "What the hell?"
"Jason! No swearing." His mother scolded and along with his father, they made their way inside the house.
Jason, Jack and the girl all hovered over the camera.
"What's the date today?" She asked, looking at her brothers.
"It's not Halloween, Becca. Why is this guy hunched forward and blood all over his body?" Jack frowned.
Jason looked up and turned in the direction the camera was pointed for the photo. The figure was closer, it turned out to be a man. Directly straight from the photo, he had blood everywhere, a large wound in his leg and he was stumbling closer towards the group of siblings.
Jason gripped on to his brother and sisters arm, tugging them in the direction of the house. "Come on, he doesn't look friendly."
The girl turned to look at the man. Her eyes peeking over Jason's shoulder. His eyes were bloodshot, lifeless almost. Her body started to tremble, the sight of that man urged her to run inside the house quickly and into the living room.
The front door slammed closed behind Jack and the whole family stood in the living room. Their parents were completely oblivious to what their children had just witnessed.
"Something is going on," Jason warned, "Jack, turn the news on." He ordered.
The father of the family folded his arms, "What are you kids yapping about. Go outside, play sport, take some photos."
Their mother cut in, agreeing with her husband "Go in the sun, vitamin D is good for you kids."
Their daughter shook her head no. "Mom, there was a guy out there. He was covered in blood, and looked very sick."
Her mother rose an eyebrow.
Jack switched the TV on and flicked through the channels until he came upon the news.
"-going around. People are bloodlust, we think it may be contagious. There isn't much information about this disease yet so stay tuned, and for safety reasons, stay inside."
The news station was then taken over by an ad.
Everyone in the family stared at the television in confusion, thought, and fear.
"See," Jason pointed,"there's something contagious going around and I have a feeling that man out there might be one of its victims."
"I'll go lock the doors, Kids, go pack a bag." Their mother ordered.
Abruptly their Father cut in, "Why are they packing bags for, they weren't even certain about this whole 'disease' thing."
"And you want to stay here when they are?"
He thought deeply, she had a point. "Well, no--"
"He mentioned them being bloodlust, Marcus. Bloodlust. Do you really think we should stay in a town where people are going to be possibly killed by another human more then the regular murders? I certainly don't." She snapped. "I want our family safe, and I'm sure leaving is the only solution."
Their daughter made an appearance in the room, in her hand she was clutching onto the handle of her backpack filled with clothes, toiletries, her phone charger and perfume.
"I'm all ready Mom." She gave a smile, and chucked her back pack up onto the couch, following behind it and taking a seat.
"Good, good." Her mother said. "Go grab your brothers, tell them we are leaving tonight."
*
Rebecca's eyes snapped open. She stared up at the familiar cracked ceiling, her heart thumping fast.
Images of her Mother, Father and two brothers clouded her thoughts. The sight of their friendly faces broke her heart, memories were all she had left of them.
Sitting upright Rebecca looked down at her hands in her lap.
'I have no proof they're dead', she thought. 'They could possibly be alive and here I am thinking they aren't. There's only one way to be sure...'
She gripped the sheet in her hands and after lying back down, brought it up to her neck. She snuggled her face in the warm comfort of the pillow.
'I can't go tonight, I'm too weak when it comes to walkers. Day time is a better option.' She closed her eyes and sighed. 'Im going to go back to the caravan and find out for myself if my family is alive or dead. I have the right to know.'
The thought of seeing her parents alive caused Rebecca's heart to skip a beat. She missed her mothers hugs, her dad's crazy stupid jokes and her brothers constant complaints about each other.
She was getting too excited, what if they weren't alive? What if they were dead? What would she do then? Live life exactly how she is now, or suffer a broken heart everyday yearning at the loss of her family.
All negative thoughts aside, hopefully they were alive. Rebecca couldn't live knowing she was alone in this world.
