Chapter 11:
The next day Rebecca woke up feeling utterly exhausted. She was awake half the night caring for poor Beth, who was coughing and running a high temperature throughout the whole night. Maggie insisted on staying by Beth's side for the night but there clearly wasn't enough space in the room nor bed for her sleep in. With Rebecca's handy persuasive talking skills she talked Maggie into sleeping in her own room with Glenn for the night whilst Rebecca promised her, she would check up on Beth every few hours.
Looking through the glass window covering the top half of the door, Rebecca saw the morning sunshine shine through the thin curtains downstairs. Without a clock to look at, Rebecca would have guessed it was around five in the morning-if not, earlier.
Beth was sound asleep, thank god. Quickly Rebecca placed her cool hand upon the burning skin of Beth's forehead. Her temperature hadn't seemed to cool down, it had most likely warmed up.
Beth groaned, and pressed her head harder against the palm of Rebecca's hand, savouring the cool and relief feeling that washed over her body.
A yawn escaped Rebecca's plump lips. 'Everyone will be up in an hours time, what can I do for an hour?', she asked herself.
She twirled a piece of hair around her finger. She noticed it was all matted and clumped together in a disgusting and unclean way. 'I definitely need a shower, that's for sure'. Next she breathed on her hand and quickly smelt the stench. Her nose crinkled up in disgust, it had been a while since she had gave her teeth a good scrub--and to think she kissed Carl with this breath. Ew.
Rebecca let out a huge sigh. Before she thought about moving a muscle the door leading to their room squeaked open. Turning around quickly, Rebecca held her breath.
Behind the door Maggie made an appearance. Rebecca let out a shaky breath. "Sorry," Maggie whispered, "I didn't know you would be awake."
A chuckle escaped through Rebecca's parted lips. "It's fine, really. Honestly, I was having trouble sleeping." She answered back politely.
The skin on Maggie's forehead creased and her brows knotted in confusion. "Oh? Why's that? If it's the nightmares keeping you up all night don't worry. We got this place safe and secure." She smiled and suddenly her eyes widened as though she realised something. "Speaking of safe, why did you go into the clearly marked blocked off zone?"
Rebecca braced herself for a long awaiting speech. She placed her hands in her lap and sat up straight, perfecting her posture. So she began; "Well, yesterday things were said and feelings were shared. I was having one of my moments, in which I wanted my puppy, Cookie. I couldn't find him anywhere and so I jumped to conclusions and barged my way over to Carl, demanding he give back my puppy. Turned out he didn't have him and then something must have ticked because the next minute he was offering to help me find him."
"Anyway, long story short, I thought Cookie would be in that blocked off area since we looked everywhere in the area of the museum. All I did was get Carl into more trouble." She finished, grumbling out the last few words.
Even though her explanation was short, it was anything but interesting; So when Rebecca looked up to see Maggie staring down at her, giving Rebecca her full attention, it was surprising.
"So...where's your puppy now? Did you find him?"
••••
A surge of adrenaline corrupted through Rebecca's body as the ground beneath her blurred out. The steady thump of her footsteps against the cold concrete surface echoed in her ears.
