That night, while everyone was sleeping, Coumba quietly made her way to the shore to find the gold. She did not want to wait until the next morning in case someone else saw the gold and took it. As she neared the water's edge, she gazed into its depths. The moon shone bright and illuminated all of the gold just under the ocean's surface.
Coumba daringly walked into the water and bent down to retrieve the shiny gold she had seen there. While she stared at the shell in her hands wondering what kind of gold it was, the ocean rose up in a giant wave above Coumba. It grabbed her like a greedy hand grabs the last bit of meat from the communal plate, and swallowed Coumba whole.
