After winning Third Place in last year's Open Novella Contest competition, I would be amiss if I didn't try my hand this year to see where the prompts would take me.
For those who are unfamiliar with the contest, the goal is to write a brand new 20K-word completed novella over three months' time, with each round being judged at 2K, 8K and 20K words, respectively.
This time around, I'm going return to my comfort zone and stick with Fantasy, but we're going to give it a much-deserved LGBTQ+ twist. Therefore, I'm choosing the Contemporary & General Fiction - Prompt #8:
To escape her abusive parents, a princess dresses up as a male vigilante to protect her kingdom but soon catches feelings for her own 'damsel in distress', who knows nothing of her royal blood or true identity.

The goal with this project is to realize that being a woman and wanting to be saved versus being saved isn't always so simple to discern, and our hero and her 'damsel' will quickly discover that as their adventures play out.
