Chapter Twenty:

Daniel sighed leaning in between the twin sinks to get as close to the bathroom mirror as possible. Currently, he was standing alone in the restroom of the rather nice restaurant starting to notice dark circles forming under his eyes as Kade waited in the lobby for their table to be called. He'd slipped away for just a moment with his only intention to check if his hair looked out of place, it'd been very windy when they'd come into the restaurant but now he couldn't seem to stop staring at his eyes. They were barely there but definitely there none the less, and incredibly noticeable to him, no doubt he'd achieved this new raccoon form from his newfound lack of sleep.

Another week had passed since he and Amber had fought again and things had only gotten more awkward at home. Things in the apartment were too quiet, the air was too tense, but Daniel let things lie, determined to let Amber come around on her own time instead of beating the situation over the head persistently like he had a bad habit of. He was sure the bags weren't noticeable to anyone other than himself. He paused for a moment tousling his hair thinking back on if Kade had said anything about him being tired lately.

Daniel was certain Kade had asked him about his sleep schedule once or twice recently, he stared at them for a moment then shook his head assuring himself they weren't as noticeable as he was convinced they were and Kade's questions probably hadn't been related. Daniel assured himself again and again, slowly stepping back from the mirror, almost forcibly tearing his gaze away from the bags under his eyes to instead admire the outfit he'd picked out for the night. He hadn't worn these tight black slacks in a while but they went perfectly with the pale blue button-down shirt he'd recently bought.

He'd matched the outfit with a pair of satin baby blue heels for just a small touch of femininity and chose to forgo the makeup. He'd left his hair down in its natural state, something he was now considering a mistake due to his current wind tousled state. The red waves barely brushed against his shoulders now. He twirled a few strands around his finger making a mental note to have it cut tomorrow. Taking a deep breath he gave himself another quick once over and moved away from the mirror. Almost mindlessly he wandered back to where he'd left Kade in the lobby, admiring a few nice decorations along the way his mind got lost in thought.

He as genuinely surprised how smoothly things were going between him and Kade currently. It seemed too good to be true at times but then Daniel remembered all the issues with his family and friends. Truthfully they didn't seem to affect Kade and the Lucas family seemed more than ready to fully absorb Daniel into their family structure, all except Kade's father, Joshua. The man didn't say much, but he was almost a disapproving judgey presence that just existed in the background of the Lucas' family's otherwise welcoming demeanor. To be fair Min had insisted that he not worry, Joshua would come around and oddly Daniel did believe her.

It was a new experience, being a part of a normal functional family and Daniel couldn't help but smile and the thought of it. He liked the idea of Min calling him randomly just to chat or the twins dropping by his work just to hang out. The twins had even referred to him as their brother in law a few times since he and Kade had started dating which had shocked him but also it did make him worry. The Lucas family seemed to have it set in stone that they were perfectly matched and Daniel couldn't help but hope it was true but there was always the possibility that it wasn't.

He and Kade hadn't talked much about Kade's ex since the time at the aquarium, part of Daniel really didn't want to talk about her. It seemed weird and invasive to poke and prod Kade about the failures of his relationship. He'd said she'd cheated on him, Daniel tried to convince himself that was enough of an explanation for him but sometime he couldn't help but want to know more. Mainly he wanted to know the full details of the situation that had lead up to their break up.

Kade hadn't asked a single question about Daniel's client list since their one discussion, he hadn't pushed Daniel to prove he'd actually stopped doing those meetings, and they certainly hadn't talked about Mr.Iverson but Kade didn't seem concerned at all by it. It made Daniel feel guilty that he wanted to poke around in Kade's old affairs when Kade had seemed so indifferent to his. Daniel had tried time and time again to tell himself the matters weren't equivalent and that it was normal to be curious but he still felt oddly guilty.

"Daniel?" Kade's voice snapped him out of thought, he'd ended up back in the lobby much quicker than he'd realized currently standing only a few steps away from Kade. Daniel smiled slightly embarrassed to have been caught in thought like that. He stepped forward closing the space between them taking the liberty of placing a small kiss on Kade's lips. He pulled back slowly looking up at the older man, who simply quirked an eyebrow in response. "Something on your mind?"

"Yeah, I actu-"

"Daniel?" A woman's sharp voice cut him off, calling out to him from his left. He turned his head in an almost automatic response, immediately wishing he hadn't as Savannah waved excitedly and began to approach him. The sight of her was like the emotionally equivalent of scraping nails on a chalkboard, it just made him feel gross. The last thing he needed was his family dropping in to ruin the whole thing and that was the only thing he could imagine happening running into Savannah because seeing Savannah could only mean Harry was not far behind.

Savannah was a twenty-something, big-breasted, dyed blonde-haired, daughter of someone that came into Harry's life sometime around after college. She was conventionally attractive and had connections so when Harry wanted to have fun in public without embarrassing their parents Savannah was the one he called. Daniel could feel a slight headache beginning to emerge just from the sight of her as she neared ever closer and by the time she stood completely in front of them his head was felt like it'd had a hammer taken to it.

"Kade, I haven't seen you in years!" She squealed, making Daniel dig his fingers into his palm. "I hear from Harry you two were dating but I didn't believe him, I mean someones clearly settling here right?"

Kade quickly reached out, wrapping an arm around the redhead's shoulders bring him close against his side before Daniel could spit out the nasty retort he had brewing in the back of his mind. He shot Kade a glare as Savanah continued laughing at her own joke, surprisingly Kade shot him a glare back a clear sign he'd prefer Daniel not to start anything.

"It's nice seeing you too Savannah, but we are on a date right now so maybe we can catch up another time?" Kade sighed trying his best to be diplomatic in this situation. He didn't really have anything against Savannah necessarily, she was annoying yes but he didn't fault her for it too much. She stared at him seemingly shocked for a moment before she nodded digging through her purse to retrieve her cellphone.

"Uh, yeah no I get it, Harry's probably looking for me anyways." She mumbled pulling her pink glittered cased phone from her bag, unlocking the screen she immediately opening it to messages. "What's your number? I'll text you."

Daniel sighed as Kade rambled off his number for her, resting his head against the older man just for a moment, feeling his headache start to subside at the idea Savannah would be gone soon but he should have known better. He looked past the blonde's shoulder as Kade finished up a few pleasantries with her and immediately his headache returned as he noticed Harry approaching them.
