Leo was worried about the old gaffer

Leo was worried about the old gaffer. He stayed in bed because his bum leg bothered him more than usual; he said it felt numb. On top of that, he said his head felt as though someone was splitting it open with an ax.
The rest of his father's words sounded slurred and incoherent. At first, Leo thought he had been drinking.
"Grover, what happened here?" Juniper said.
She threw her arms up in despair at the sight of her geese roaming free in the road.
"I don't know," Grover replied.
"Check the fence around the poultry yard to see if there're any holes in it."
Juniper put down the basket she carried flapped her skirts, trying to drive the geese back into the poultry yard.
"Here's the problem; they dug their way underneath the fence."
Grover picked up a large stone and carried it over to fill up the hole.
"There, that should keep them from getting out again."
Juniper picked up her basket and walked over to the forge.
"Can I interest you in some medlar fruit?" She said to Leo. "I just picked them. Some of them are just rotten enough to eat. The rest need some time to ripen, and when they do, I'm going to make medlar jelly."
