What. The. Hell. There are no words to describe my feelings. Sam killed Mum? She never told me? This is too much to process. And Jacob's here, damn it. I need him to leave, in the politest way possible.

I leave the letter on the bed and go downstairs.

"Hey Alex, you good? You look sick."

"I'm good. Have you found a game?"

"Yeah but I think you should lie down."

"I'm fine, honest."

I know he doesn't believe a word of what I'm saying. But instead of pushing he just says, "Okay, let's see who the UFC champion is."

He hands me the controller. We play several matches. Jacob wins all of them. I'm not really paying much attention. All I can hear are Sam's words. I killed her.

She can't have. She's not like that. She's never harmed anyone. There must be another explanation. There has to be. I just need to find it.

"You sure you good? Alex, something's seriously wrong with you."

"What d'you mean?"

"Your head is in the clouds. You're not focusing. What happened when you went upstairs?"

"Nothing, don't worry about it." He knows I'm being evasive but I can't tell him, not until I figure it all out. "I'm just tired okay? Maybe I should go to sleep."

He's still suspicious but he says, "Okay, you do that. I'm going home."

"Cool."

"See ya round I guess."

"Yeah."

As soon as he leaves I run straight to Sam's room. I need answers and fast. I read the letter again, slower this time to see if there's any hints.

If you want to know anything else, read my diary.

I look at her diary. The temptation is there. But no, I'm not going to read it yet. I turn back to the letter.

You're never going to see me again

The further you stay away the safer you'll be.

remove me from your life

I just processed what she meant. What. The. Hell.

Sam has run away.
