"Someone sent you a gift, Miss Rodriquez," the nurse smiled as she sat the Edible Arrangement on the counter a few feet from my bed.

She was careful not to wake Joe, who was sleeping, as she carefully maneuvered around his chair. The nurse closed the door behind her, and I watched over him to make sure the noise hadn't waken him up. When he didn't move, I gingerly rolled out of bed and limped over to the fruit basket.

There were chocolate-covered strawberries, pineapples, grapes, mangoes, and cantaloupe. All of my favorites, nothing more and nothing less. I wasn't up for eating, but I considered the thought to count for something. Curious to know who sent it, I found the tag and flipped it over.

Maria, I know that some fruit won't make up for everything I've put you through over the years. I just needed a way for you to know how sorry I am about how things ended between us. I heard what happened to you, and I wish I was there to protect you. I know you've got good people looking out for you though. I'm hoping you get well soon and heal from all of this. I'll be seeing you,

An old friend from your past,

Damian
