Maryland, USA, 2079

Senator Marcus stood on one of the larger balconies of his home, gazing out at the chaos before him. The terrified people. The soldiers keeping order. The ruins of Washington, D.C. in the distance. Obliterated, like dozens of other cities across the United States. Not that it would be the United States much longer.

It was a shame that there had to be so much death, so much destruction. But it was the only way. It's impossible to build a new house on the same foundation without first tearing down the old one.

Some might have called him a traitor, but the Senator knew the truth. He had had to cooperate with his enemies and wreak havoc on his own nation, but it was out of love for his country, not hatred. He had a vision, and he wasn't the only one. So many, so many to bring this plan to fruition... and himself, on top of them all.

It would take years, he knew. Maybe decades. And the death was not over— no, not even close. The people must be contained. Dissent must be silenced. Fear would have to keep them in line, until his vision became simply routine. An unfortunate necessity.

He closed his eyes, picturing it now. A society with no head starts, no old money, no family names or pointless social groups. Status would be based on intelligence, ability, and loyalty, nothing else. Self-sufficient cities, each walled-off sector an efficient cog in a well-oiled machine, each person in the job best suited to their abilities. No unemployment. No crime. Proficiency rewarded and incompetence punished.

Paradise. Paradise of his creation, and his control. Forever.
