Chapter Fourteen

"Blame it all on my roots. I showed up in boots- And ruined your black-tie affair." She began quietly at first.

She continued, "The last one to know. The last one to show. I was the last one you thought you'd see there." She was gaining confidence now, seeing as she hadn't been booed yet. The whiskey she had earlier really helping.

"And I saw the surprise,

And the fear in his eyes

When I took his glass of champagne."

Adeline saw Arthur join the party out of the corner of her eyes. She wanted him to see that she was doing fine without him because he had been ignoring her for days.

"And I toasted you

Said, 'Honey, we may be through,

But you'll never hear me complain.'"

Adeline strummed the guitar a little louder as the chorus came up.

"Cause I've got friends in low places,

Where the whiskey drowns

And the beer chases

My blues away.

And I'll be okay.

I'm not big on social graces

Think I'll slip on down to the oasis

Oh, I've got friends in low places."

She could hear a few claps as the others began to sing along. She stole a glance at Arthur and saw a small smile on his face. She continued to play a few riffs before getting back into the words.

"Well, I guess I was wrong,

I just don't belong.

But then I've been there before.

Everything's all right,

I'll just say goodnight

And I'll show myself to the door.

Hey, I didn't mean

To cause a big scene.

Just give me an hour and then

Well, I'll be as high

As that ivory tower

That you're livin' in."

Adeline strummed faster again and called out to everybody else, "Join in!"

"Cause I've got friends in low places

Where the whiskey drowns

And the beer chases

My blues away.

And I'll be okay.

Everybody was singing along and enjoying the song. It was coming up on Adeline's favorite part.

I guess I was wrong,

I just don't belong.

But then, I've been there before.

Everything's alright,

I'll just say goodnight,

And I'll show myself through the door.

You know I didn't mean

To cause a big scene.

Just wait till I finish this glass.
