コンビニ ラブ / conbini raba / convenience shop love

"Next!"

"Uh, here," you place the bottle of tea on the counter and pass the money to the cashier, grabbing the tea before he could place it in a bag.

"No need for a bag, umm, thanks." You say, taking your reciept and shooting a half-hearted smile at the cashier. You glanced at him for a second, and the first thought that came to your mind was "he's cute."

wait. what?

==

Coming in at 2am in the morning, dark eye-circles and eye bags imprinted on your face, grabbing a drink or snack and then leaving.

That's a pretty normal thing to do, right?
I didn't notice at the start, but you were always there, at this 24h conbini, waiting at the cashier counter in the middle of the night, waiting for someone to walk in, waiting for someone to buy something, so you could show that perfect, perfect, smile and say with that silky sweet voice, "Douzo!"

I didn't notice in the beginning, how your hair fell so beautifully over your eyes, how it framed your face, or how soft it looked.

I would just buy whatever I needed and leave.

"Serizawa". Ah. That's your name. But why do I remember it?

Our fingers brushed a few times when you passed me the plastic bag.

I couldn't help but smile when you carried my bento to where I was seated after you heated it up.

Or when you asked playfully, " <item> again?"

I used to not mind which conbini I went to, but now I just head straight to where you are.

==

Ah, you're not here today?

I came early because I wanted to see you.

The heavy disappointment sunk in slowly, and I bought my items a bit reluctantly.

Not that I ate or drank what I bought anyway.

==

I think I woke up crying the next morning.

I came early the next day too. But you weren't there either.

I wondered if you'd quit, that those late shifts --  or early, depending on what you think of it -- had worn down hard on your body.

You did seem sick the last time I saw you.

When paying, I couldn't help but ask the cashier serving me, "Do you know a worker called Serizawa?"

When he said you worked the later shift, my heart skipped a beat.

At least you were still okay.

==

"You didn't come yesterday,"

Those words, laced with a hint of disappointment, hit me hard.

"Gomen, I didn't mean to make you worry,"

When you smiled at my reply, I felt so relieved, but at the same time, my heart pounded hard in my chest.

Damn, your smile was pretty.

I fell asleep smiling that night.

God, I'm so tired, but I'm still heading out tonight.

It seems that it's worth it coming out, at 2am in the morning.
