6 - City

you were creeping up on me

a little faster than I would have liked,

appearing to have no interest

in the long, winding roads that had Nature's embrace

singing in chorus from all sides

and instead storming through the darkness

of narrow streets dwarfed by tall, onyx black buildings

like shadows that had erupted from their resting place

and risen from the pavement.

embodying the headstones they were once

buried under.

clawing up towards the sky as your headlights

tore through the empty space held between them

and amputated the cloudless night

with fumes from the fuel used to ignite your fire.

tyres screaming against the cement with

such desperation that I almost imagined

you breaking through to the core of the universe.

of everything.

attracted by something that...

must have intrigued you quite a bit.

or at least caught your eye.

although I've never quite been able to put my finger on what.

perhaps the giant, glowing lights

flashing in such an array of colours that you couldn't help but

see them from miles away.

or the headlines.

or the people. or the events.

but, whatever it was,

at the time I had so much hope that

it would entice you enough

to settle.

or even stay.

attracted by the glamour but

warmed by the homily fires and colours that reminded you of

your old grandmother's rug.

that I could be the home

no one will admit they are looking for

and not the glimmering buildings in the distance

to watch from your window,

breath fogging up the glass

as you sat in the darkness

in reminiscence

of a time long forgotten

and a city to return to

only in your dreams.
