2 - Blue Eyes

it had been a few weeks

since I first saw you.

and I continued to do just that.

to watch

and to see.

in passing, of course.

only briefly.

but your eyes were blue.

a startling, rolling, drowning in the waves sort of blue that didn't really leave room for anything else,

dragging every other hue in my vision out to sea until they only resided in the debris.

some other beach.

some other time.

but I would look away.

and your steps,

that were as firm and unfaltering as ever

would fade.

gently diminishing as they waltzed down the corridor.

colour flashing back into my lungs so quickly that a startled breath left my lips.

blinking.

standing.

breathing.

trying to remember how to exist and,

most of all,

seeking a solution to the itching in my chest,

the pain like a planted seed that had been

shoved down the structured forms inside

my throat.

not quite growing.

not even a stem.

but a cautionary whisper,

hissing and murmuring as the darkened roots grappled their fingers

around my heart

in a malevolent embrace,

dabbling in the art of divination as it spoke of single buds blooming into petals and gardens,

swallowing up the space in my lungs in a way that was so

delicate

I would not care to bat an eye.

until I could not breathe.

vines, creepers, stems,

crawling up my throat and tying my vocal cords taut.

oxygen cut off until it was only you.

living, breathing and seeing

you.

but that hadn't happened yet.

for now, the only parts of you hovering in my own

little solar system

were your eyes.

not quite to the point where I was orbiting them.

not quite the sun.

yet.

more like two little moons gently rotating around my consciousness

as I fell asleep,

bright and shining in a manner that was

almost...

soothing.
