“Do you want to take a shower first?” I asked.
“O-K”, he said, his teeth clinking against one another.
I looked at him. More than half of his tee-shirt was soaked due to the rain. He had carried the umbrella holding it up just to cover me. I was moved.
I fetched him a towel and got a pair of my dad’s trousers and a loose shirt. While he showered I went to my room, got showered myself, changed my clothes and picked up my diary from the study table and went downstairs and sat by the fireplace.
I wiped the cover of the diary with my hand, as if tracing the memories imbibed in it. I opened the first page of the diary but I didn’t need the help of it to recall any of them.
I remembered the first time I met Shane. We were having a fund- raiser fair in our neighborhood and in an elocution competition we had jointly shared the first prize. His family had newly moved to our locality and our parents had got talking.
It was nothing like love at first sight. But slowly we got close to each other. After school, we practically spent all the time in our backyards after school. At that time grandma used to make us lovely pancakes and we would compete who would finish theirs first.
Once he had fever and couldn’t come out from his house. I went over to his house with the first-aid box and started bandaging his head. When his mom came in, she had smiled at me. I know now how stupid it was. But hey, in my defense, I was pretty young at that time.
Also there was a time when we were in his backyard and his mother who was an artist, had given us her old paintbrushes and colours to play with. He had mixed yellow paint in a cup and poured it over my head. I hadn’t talked to him for a whole day then and it was hell down on earth for me. The second day, he brought me a cupcake with a smiley and a hand-made ‘I am sorry’ card. Instantly we got talking and fought over the cupcake……
Then I heard someone sneezing behind me and quickly closed the book and turned back.
“I- uh, got showered.” He said sheepishly, like he was caught red-handed at something.
“Clearly….Do you want something to eat? Well something means instant noodles.” Yes, it was the only thing I could make without it being burned and myself being bruised.
He nodded and I went to the kitchen, leaving my diary in the nearest table, absentmindedly.
