"Angie, please just leave it alone. I'm happy where I am."

Jessica shoved her way through the double doors, on her way to the waiting area of the hospital.

"But you haven't been on a single date for as long as I've known you. And in case you haven't been counting that's five years!" Angie, one of Jessica's best friends, threw her arms about in exasperation.

Jessica turned and grabbed her friend by the shoulders. "Darling, I appreciate the concern, but I don't have an interest in any of the eligible bachelors around here, nor do I have the time to keep up with a relationship."

Angie crossed her arms in denial and looked away, knowing that the red head had a point. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a family to talk to."

And with that she continued on her quest to the waiting rooms to reassure the family of the twelve year old who she had just performed an appendectomy on.

*******

Jessica stretched her arms over her head and then behind her back, hearing her joints crack at the much needed release of pressure.

"Shit, that sounded like it hurt." Angie grinned cheekily at her despite the menacing glare.

"Yeah, okay, just wait until you're thirty-five and working twelve hour shifts." Jessica smirked as Angie grimaced at the idea of getting old.

"Darling, are you sure you don't need a ride?" Angie bit her lip as she considered the offer but ultimately shook her head.

"I'll be okay. I'm used to taking the subway from college anyways. It'll be like old times."

Jessica pulled open the door to her 1967 Pontiac Firebird. It was her pride and joy, originally her grandfather's who let it rust away in his garage and was then passed to her father who made it his mission to restore the car to its original beauty before Jessica went off to college. He didn't quite make that goal and instead left it to Jessica in his will to complete the restoration process. Jessica knew absolutely nothing about cars but was able to use the mechanic specified in her father's will. He was an Italian man with a colorful character and would only accept odd gold coins as payment for his services, which were also left to Jessica by her father.

"At least let me drop you at the underground entrance on my way out."

To this Angie conceded and thanked her friend when she exited the car next to the subway entrance.

"Hey," Angie called out before Jessica could take off. "Try to have fun this weekend. You never know when you'll get a whole weekend off again."

Jessica grinned. "I'll do my best."

Angie knew very well that Jessica's definition of an exciting weekend was sleeping until noon and watching Friends reruns while surrounded by an assortment of heart attack inducing snacks. But she truly hoped that her friend would find a club to go to or even a movie to see in the theaters. She really wanted Jessica to meet a man that could fulfill the needs she chose to neglect, but even Angie knew that was a stretch.

As Jessica drove off she considered taking part in the exact events Angie predicted. She glanced at the time glowing up at her from the screen of her phone. 12:45. Much too late to run to the store and grab sugary goodies.

She looked back up and placed her focus on the road, coming to a halt at a red light. The intersection was completely empty, but after years of conditioning she felt obliged to be a law abiding citizen. She glanced around the intersection as she waited for the light to turn green, admiring the beautiful buildings, especially the unusual architecture of one in particular. The building was triangular in shape and had levels of elegant molding above each set of windows. Aside from the molding the building was sleek and clean cut, making it both simple and beautifully extravagant at the same time. Her eyes were drawn to the intersecting street bordering the right side of the building. A black car was careening down the road in her direction, its engine thrumming with power. In the distance behind it a set of headlights appeared, obviously chasing after the vehicle.

Jessica gripped her steering wheel nervously as the black car neared then turn, not bothering to slow down. The car drifted to the side as it made the turn and nearly rounded it until one of its tires slipped into a pot hole, providing just enough imbalance to send the car towards a building rather than continuing on the asphalt. The tires screeched and left black marks in their tracks. The front of the car crumpled in on itself, dangerously nearing the cab of the vehicle. Dust and rubble scattered as a portion of stone from the building crumbled and fell onto the car.

Jessica leapt from her own vehicle as soon as the collision occurred, rushing towards the crash. She pulled on the driver's side door which faced the street and mercifully opened with ease. Inside she found a man coated in so much dust and blood that she could hardly make out any distinctive features. She realized that he had somehow managed to stay conscious as he groaned and rolled his head to look up at her.

"You need to come with me," she calmly stated. Jessica glanced over her shoulder to see that the second car was quickly nearing the intersection. "We need to go now. I don't know who you are or what you do but I can imagine those guys," she pointed behind her, "will leave you in much worse shape than this."

He seemed as if he was about to shake his head in rejection, but then he looked her up and down. He took note of her rumpled scrubs, messy hair, and tired eyes. She had to be a doctor. He wasn't sure if she could be trusted but he did know that he would be killed if he chose not to go with her.

He nodded slowly and attempted to pull himself out of the car. Jessica quickly moved to his side and offered her body to help support his. With the two of them working together they were able to quickly reach Jessica's still running car where she deposited him in the back seat and jumped into the front. Just as she shut her door the light finally turned green and she hit the gas.

In her rearview mirror Jessica spotted the pursuing car reaching the crash site and five men jumped from the large SUV. The men turned to look in the direction of the retreating vehicle after finding no body just as it turned out of their view.
