when we were still friends
you asked me
if I wanted to go shoot some hoops with you
I told you I hadn't played for a long time
you said that was okay
but I never got to go with you

I would have liked
to see you running up and down the court
to see your smile when you made a shot
to know if your complex heart
was racing inside that cage

some days when you would drive me
to my welding class
I'd see a basketball
tucked safely in the floorboard
of your back seat
