"Didn't think you can outrun us forever, princess?" the man spat, taking a step closer towards the girl. He reached into the depths of his torn coat pocket and retrieved a cigarrette, popping the unlit rolled-up chemicals between his thin, chapped lips. He smirked.
The girl stood her ground, cocking her head the side as she stared at the man before her, flocked by two others- his friends she supposed. All three towered over her, looking harmful and threatening. However, they didn't faze her, her expression remaining blank and unimpressed.
"Cat caught your tongue?," the man taunted. "No worries. I'm sure you understand this."
At that moment, the man snapped his thick fingers, alerting the two behind him. The men briefly glanced behind each other, scouring for any pedestrians walking by. No one was of course. Who was foolish enough to be walking in the city this late at night? Something gleamed in the darkness, causing the girl to flinch at the unexpected brightness. A knife- two.
"Oh, now the little girl is scared," the man on the left cooed, twirling the deadly object between his fingers. "You should of seen this coming. If you think you can just walk our streets without any reprucussions, you obviously are new to the area, but we can teach you a lesson or two."
The tall, lanky man laughed at his own joke. The girl, Reyna, stared the man down, assessing everything from how he spoke to how he held himslef. His grip on the knife was loose, so Reyna concluded he was all talk but inexperienced. The man next to him however remained silent, but Reyna-even through the darkness- noticed the slight tremor of his hand and the bead of sweat rolling down his forehead. Nervous.
Reyna yanked a dirty rubber band from around her wrist and pulled the mass of blonde curls into a tight ponytail. She widened her stance and held her fists near her face, preparing herself for the fight that was about to ensue. The three men barked out a laugh.
"The princess here thinks she's a knight, boys," the leader called, finally pulling a lighter from his pocket to spark his cigarette. He took a deep breath in before releasing it with a large puff of smoke. "Show her, her place."
Without a moment of hesitation, the lanky, cocky man charged himself towards Reyna, knife raised. Reyna stood her ground, and let him charge her. It was a rookie's mistake charging into a fight like that- Reyna had learned the hard way. She didn't move an inch until the he was almost in arm's reach of her. Reyna simply stepped out of the way, jutting her leg out. The man fumbled and attempted to stop himself, but his momentum sent him tumbling over her leg and onto the concrete with a groan.
The other man was instantly on her, swiping and brandishing the knife across her face. Reyna ducked and rolled, instantly popping up and throwing her elbow at the back of his head. The man groaned in pain, dropping his weapon. Reyna took the opportunity to kick the man in his back sending him head first into the outside wall of a warehouse. The man crumbled to the ground, unconscious.
Reyna picked up the discared knife and turned her attention back to the other man, who sat shocked on the ground, all of his previous courageousness gone. After a moment, the man narrowed his eyes and clenched his fists.
"You little-" the man spat, throwing the knife at Reyna .
She dived out of the way, but she was too slow she realized when pain blossomed across her cheek. As she slammed against the ground, blood flowing from the gash across her skin, Reyna's knife flew from her grasp, skidding across the cement.
Reyna cursed as a heavy body suddenly pressed onto her, holding her restless body against the ground. "You aren't as smart as you think, princess," he purred in her ear, holding the retrieved knife against her throat. "You should of just played nice and be a good girl."
Good girl.
Those two words echoed in Reyna's mind hauntingly, sparking a buried rage within her. Seeing red, Reyna bit the man hand. He bellowed in rage, and Reyna took advantage of his vulnerability to thrust him off of her. She wrenched the knife from his grasp and plunged it into his thigh. The man let out another blood curdling scream as Reyna stood up, brushing the dirt of her torn, soiled clothing. She made eye contact with their leader. His mouth went slack, the cigarette tumbling to the ground beneath him, before bolting.
Reyna guessed she would have to find a new place to sleep tonight.
