Chapter 6: Getting to know the team

Start from the beginning

Outside captain Fowler's office, the air already seemed much easier to breathe in. We both walked back to Hank's desk in silence, yet I felt more comfortable like that than having to face Hank's superior once more. Arriving next to Connor, I listened to him addressing the lieutenant.

"It's an honor to be working with you, Lieutenant. I'm sure together with detective (L/N), we'll make a great team."

A grin covered the androids face but it was easy to tell that it was imposed. Hank stayed quiet, his arms crossed, eyes focused on his screen.

"Now that we're partners, it would be great to get to know each other better." Connor kept talking, yet Hank did not react.

Feeling it was my place to speak up, I did as my mind told me. "I'm sorry that the captain forced this teamwork on you Hank. Well, to start this off, are there any desks Connor and I could use?"

A small smile laced my lips, as I tried to change the subject and make the situation less awkward.

"No one's using that one. Guess you gotta share it." He pointed to the one across from his own. I nodded, grabbed an unused chair and placed it next to the one the detective android sat down on.

I had to get somehow close to Connor in order to actually still sit at the table, hence my shoulder brushed his. While Hank now focused on his screen, my eyes met the android's brown ones, as I emitted a silent breath. Strangely, this vicinity caused a warmth to rise inside my chest, leaving a pleasant sentiment behind. Bashful, I averted my own eyes and tried to distract myself by staring at the table. Completely childish - I knew that, yet I could not help it. Being locked in CyberLife's facilities, I had only gotten closer to a few scientists that accompanied me during the years. This unfamiliar contact was overwhelming but compacent as well.

"You have a dog, right?" Connor asked Hank.

I perked my head up, taking interest in his new approach to try and get to know the lieutenant.

"How do you know that?" The grey haired man skeptically eyed the android, looking up from his screen.

"The dog hairs on your chair. I like dogs. What's your dog's name?"

Somehow the way Connor acted was too adorable to be true. While I was aware that he tried to get closer to Hank for the mission's sake, I believed to sense a slight curiosity emerging from himself too.

"What's it to you?" the lieutenant questioned and turned back to his work. To my surprise, he did offer an answer a second later. "Sumo, I call him Sumo."

This conversation seriously warmed my heart, hence I chuckled to myself, inadvertantly drawing my partner's attention to myself.

"Do you have a dog detective (L/N)?" Connor asked me the same thing but I shook my head, still partly covering my mouth with one hand.

"No, I do think they are cute though. I just never really owned enough money to take care of an animal." I stated, shrugging my shoulders.

Feeling that my sentence had ended on a quite sad note, I quickly added, "Oh, I would love to see a picture of Sumo one day! If you have one, will you show it to me?" I smiled at Hank, who squinted one eye at me.

"Sure."

Satisfied, I nodded, silence growing between us again.

That was, until Connor inquired something else. He faced the lieutenant another time. "Do you listen to Knights of the Black Death? I really like that music. It's...full of energy..."

Nonplussed by his words, I blankly stared at the android next to me. I could not image him to listen to such a band. Not in a million years. As if voicing my thoughts, Hank doubtingly asked, "You listen to Heavy Metal?"
