"I need to go." You said and pushed the blankets off of yourself. You knew that you shouldn't stay cuddled up with him knowing that you were going to break things off with him soon.

"What? Why?" Auston asked, sitting up in bed. You always stayed.

You shook your head and started to pick up your discarded clothes. "Don't worry about it." That was a lie.

And Auston knew it. "(Y/N). What's going on?" He asked you, furrowing his brows.

You sighed and sat down on his side of the bed once you had gotten your underwear and shirt back on. "Aus... I have to tell you something."

Auston swallowed and sat up straighter. "Okay?"

You opened and then closed your mouth before giving him a sad smile. "Auston, I don't think that we should do this anymore."

Auston blinked back at you. The two of you had been doing "this," being friends with benefits, casual hook ups, for several months and it was a set up that worked so well for both of you.

But, the whole point of it was so that the two of you could "scratch that itch" while both remaining single. There would be no more sexual frustrations. Neither of you had a partner. Until now.

You had met someone. You never brought it up because you didn't know if it was going to last or work, but it was. You liked the guy so you knew that you had to stop sleeping with Auston.

"Why?" He asked you after a long moment.

You took a deep breath. "I met someone."

Auston nodded his head. You met someone so you didn't need him anymore. "Oh."

You nodded. "So, we can't do this again."

"Okay." Auston said, very monotone. He never said anything else as you got dressed and left his place.

--

That was the beginning of March and you hadn't seen Auston since. He dodged your calls and never answered your texts. He ghosted you, which hurt. A lot. But what were you to do about it? The friends with benefits idea was yours and you were the one that broke it off.

The truth was that Auston had feelings for you. He was actually planning on telling you about his feelings when you broke things off with him, so he ghosted you because he didn't know how to handle his feelings. Because he couldn't bear to see you with another guy.

But that was March and now it was December.

It had been close to a year and a new season later.

And Auston was handling his feelings just fine, or so he thought. Not seeing or talking to you for so long hurt, but he knew that seeing you with another guy would hurt so much more and he had to protect himself.

And, well, Toronto is a big city, the biggest in Canada, but it wasn't big enough.

Auston was out with the boys at a club celebrating a win. He let his eyes scan the club, just seeing what kind of characters where in the place when he eyes fell on you. He nearly dropped his drink, but he was able to recover. Then he thought that there was no way it was you, Toronto was too big for that, but he looked at you straight on and there was no way it wasn't you.

And then the guy came over and put his hand on your lower back. You smiled at the guy, completely oblivious to Auston just meters away.

The truth was, you started to see the guy and stopped things with Auston because you had feelings for Auston and you knew that there was never going to be anything more between the two of you and you felt guilty sleeping with him when it meant more to you than it did him.

And then Auston stopped talking to you and it hurt. A lot. But the new guy was there and sure, you didn't like him as much as you liked Auston, but he was there and he was good to you.

But he wasn't Auston.

Auston watched you and the guy the whole night and he noticed the way the guy would look at other girls and was maybe a bit rough with you, and he didn't like it. He knew that he could treat you better.

"I'm going for it." Auston told the boys when the guy had grabbed his coat and left while you stayed on the dance floor.

They literally all told him "no." But he didn't listen and stood up from his chair. Fred tried to stop him, but the look Auston gave him which his dead eyes...Fred let him go.

"Maybe it would give him some closure." Fred shrugged when Mitch glared at him for letting Auston go.

Auston slipped through the dance floor until he made it to you and he pressed himself up against your back, putting his hands on your hips. He missed having you that close.

You froze at the feeling of another guy against you. It wasn't (B/F/N), you knew that much. But, at the same time, the touch felt familiar to you, so you let the guy stay. (B/F/N) was gone anyways and it wasn't like you were going to do anything, so why not dance?

You and Auston danced together for a few songs before you brought your hand up to his arm, pushing the sleeve up a bit. You saw the bit of ink peeking out and you were curious. And then you froze. You knew that ink. You turned around very quickly and came face to face with Auston Matthews.

"Oh my god." You whispered before stepping back.

Auston opened and then closed his mouth. He didn't know what to say. And you didn't know what to say either, so the two of you looked at each other in the middle of the dance floor for a while.

"I'm sorry." Auston whispered.

And you couldn't help but laugh. "You cut my out of your life and now you're grinding on me and you're sorry?"

Auston shrugged. "It's no excuse, and I know that, but I am sorry. I just..." He shook his head. "I didn't know how to handle my feelings. I still don't I guess." He explained. He hadn't seen you in months, you had a boyfriend and he was probably never going to see you again after this, so why not just tell you.

He had nothing left to lose.

You furrowed your brows. "What are you talking about?"

Auston gave you a soft smile. "You're so fucking smart. You know, I never understood how you never noticed, or maybe you noticed but just ignored it..."

"Auston, what are you talking about?"

"I'm in love with you. I'm so fucking in love with you. That's why I cut you out, okay? I couldn't handle the thought of seeing you with another guy, of you being with another guy. I know it's selfish, but..." Auston shrugged, laying the truth right out on the dance floor.

And your mind spiraled. Auston was in love with you. You left him because you loved him and he didn't love you but he did. He loved you.

"I love you, too." You said. "That's why I broke things off in the first place."

Auston's jaw fell open. "Are you kidding me?"

You shook your head. "I didn't want to take advantage of you. You know, having sex with you when I was actually in love with you and all."

Auston shook his head with a small smile before he stepped closer to you. He brought his hand up to your cheek before crashing his lips to yours. You brought your hands up to grip his shirt and his free hand slid down to your ass causing you to moan softly into the kiss.

You pulled back from the kiss after a moment. "We should get out of here."

Auston smiled and shook his head. "I want to do this properly. A real relationship."

You smiled at him and nodded. "I would like that, too."

"Good." He chuckled and stepped back from you. "And to start off on the right foot, there's no us until there's no you and whatever his name is."

You nodded your head. "I'm okay with that."

Auston smiled and kissed you again, this time softer. "You have my number, call or text me, okay?" He said when he pulled back.

You nodded. "Okay."

He looked at you for a moment longer before turning and walking back to his table.
