the two just stand in front of each other,

staring and waiting for the other to make the first move.

Jihye is frozen in shock,

disbelief,

and denial.

her nose and eyes stings

and tears fill her eyes

and she doesn't know why.

Hoseok clears his throat,

shoves his hands into the pockets of his pant pockets,

and tilts his head up to be leveled with the confused girl.

"Look Jihye,"

he tries to look her in the eyes,

but she hangs her head down, her hair covering her like a curtain,

"i do like you, i really do, but just not in that way."

He pauses for a second, and inhales shakily, before continuing,

"i know that sounds so cliche, but it's true. i mean, you're a cool person and i honestly love hanging out with you, and i-"

Hoseok completely stops,

and Jihye cautiously raises her head to meet his eyes.

"i already like someone else,"

his words flew out like millions of tiny needles stabbing her heart.

"who?"

she interrogates almost immediately

and harsher than she meant

the boy just stands nervous in front of her,

fumbling through his pockets and swaying feverishly.

"uhhh, you probably don't know her, but this girl from my biology class, Lee Chaerin."

but Jihye does know her.

her mind goes back to the times

when the older girl would pick on her

for her pigtails in elementary school

and her test scores throughout junior high.

the way she'd mock her every move,

it was as if Jihye was placed under a microscope

being watched and criticized all the time.

"look Jihye,"

Hoseok's smooth voice

breaks her from her spiraling self-deteriorating thoughts,

and back into her dreaded reality,

"i'm sorry i'm not the best at handling these situations, but, i-i just have to go now. I gotta get to the shop,"

he says with overwhelming guilt and awkwardness in his voice.

"I-it's fine, i g-gotta go now too. Nari has probably been waiting for me for a while now,"

she croaks out,

her voice cracking a bit as she suppresses her tears.

"well, i'll see you tomorrow then, and i hope none of this will be awkward or anything,"

he gently says with a soft smile cracked on his face.

the smile that made Jihye first fall for him,

and now breaks her.

"yeah, everything will be fine,"

she replies in a small and feeble voice.

Hoseok pats her back and smiles one last time,

"alright, i'm gonna leave now. see ya tommorrow."

he makes his way towards the door,

getting further and further away from her,

and all she can do is watch his shadow become fainter

and fainter before it disappears behind the door.
