The Only Exception

Start from the beginning

Flash forward seven years, walking into that Starbucks was the highlight of Dans day to say the least. He had been fired from his job at The DIY store, walked into a door and given himself a bloody nose, and to top it off he made some kid cry after accidentally knocking into them. He was pretty sure that if he dropped a pencil he would break down into tears and give up on life.

He walked up to the counter and gave the barista his order and money. He walked back to a table with his coffee and laid his head down. He couldn't think of a reason to keep doing this whole thing called life.

"In the end we just grow old and die alone." He mumbled under his breath.

His thoughts were interrupted by a northern accent asking him if the seat across from him was taken. He looked up to meet the big blue eyes of a man appearing the same age as him. The guy had black hair that fell opposite of Dan's. He was wearing a OMFG cat t-shirt that looked like it was meant for a 12 year old.

Dan wanted to say yes, the seat was taken and be left in peace, but the cafe was full and he was never one to be rude. "Have a seat."

The man smiled and sat down. The first few minutes it was just awkward silence, then the guy smiled gently at him.

"I hope you don't mine me asking, but are you okay?

Dan paused. Did he really wanna talk to a stranger about whether or not he was okay?

He shrugged, "Just a bad day, I guess."

Phil nodded and hummed, I've had quite a few of those if you wanna talk about it.

Dan shook his head, "Not particularly."

"Understood. My names Phil, by the way."

"I'm Dan."

Dan didn't know why, but his head didn't feel as heavy anymore.

Phil smiled again, his tongue peeking out in a rather cute way.

Dan shook his head, he hated when this happened. He didn't need anybody. He was fine a lone. He liked it that way.

After an hour or so of conversation, they realized that they had a lot in common. Like, a scary amount of things in common.

"Do you wanna go on a walk with me?" Phil asked, eyes twinkling in the afternoon light.

Dan numbly found himself nodding, even if the guilt creeping up told him this was a bad idea. He could always use more friend anyways...right?

As they made their way down the street, they kept asking each other questions back in fourth. Currently, it was Phil's turn to ask.

"So Dan, anybody special in the picture?" Phil questioned.

Dan sighed rather loudly before saying

"Love is a lie, phil. The sooner people figure it out, the better.

Phil frowned, "What makes you say that Dan?"

Dan shook his head and smiled in a bitter way.

"I watched my parents lie come crumbling down around them. My mother said she would never forguve my dad. My dad took it's so much harder, though. He became a shell of a human. He put up a good front, but she destroyed him. It's like when she left, she took a part of him, too. My father just cried and cursed to the wind. So now, I don't believe in love and I don't talk about love because it doesn't exist."

"Jesus. Well I can't say your points not valid." Phil mumbled.

Dan nodded but continued to walk and talk as if the subject had never been brought up.

As the next few months came and went Dan would meet Phil more and more until it was a daily occurance. They had become best friends, and starting today flatmates.

Phil had asked Dan if he wanted to move in, and Dan having a small, quite disgusting flat was quick to agree. He had just finished unpacking all of his stuff in his new room when he went into the lounge to find phil on the phone ordering pizza. What a godsend. Phil hung up a minute later and looked at Dan.  Dan sat down on the couch, Phil immediately used him as a pillow.

Dan and Phil had been doing this quite often and it was scaring Dan. He'd never allowed himself to become this close with another person before. But it's like that didn't matter when he was with Phil. When he was with Phil, its like all the problems he had with love and giving in, became background noise.

He couldnt believe he was actually admitting it to himself. He didn't care that he was falling in love and fast. He looked over to see Phil starring at him. Dan gave a half smile and Phil did the same. Before he realized what he was doing, it was too late. He was leaning into Phil, and Phil was leaning into him. Maybe it went against everything he had ever said. Maybe that made him a prick or a fool, but falling for Phil was more like falling with Phil.

He felt their lips genly brush over each other, innocently. When their lips connected there was no bombs or fireworks, but there was that feeling that Phil was the one that would make Dan happy. The one that would make this scary feeling okay. The one that would give him hope. Even if they broke up or ended in flames, maybe in the end it would still be worth it.  They broke apart with smiles on their faces,

"Phil, I think...that maybe, I love you. A lot."

Phil looked at Dan and said, "I thought you didn't believe in love? You sure I'm with the risk?" The words contradicted the gigantic smile on Phil's face.

Dan nodded back,

"I've got a tight grip on reality, but I can't let go of whats in front of me here."

Phil leaned closer and said,

"Dan I think i love you, too."

Dan smiled and whispered,

"You are the only exception, and I'm on my way to believing."
