i have never been able to enjoy a sunset

flooded by the essence of it 

i am caught in the moment

simultaneously longing for the halcyon past

and for the glorious future

really

it's the present that i'm trying to see

even as i cannot bring myself to look directly at it

i have never been able to enjoy a sunset

for as soon as it begins

it begins to fade

a reminder that all living things in the world are dying

slowly at first i watch the radiant color seep out 

and i am swept away by

the bittersweet beauty of the dying sun

i have never been able to enjoy a sunset

but i know beyond doubt

that i love them
