There was barely any space between you and another person's shoulders as you walked amidst the crowd. So far, the mayor had only taken the large group to the library, the hospital and the 28th Stop platform itself. The tour dragged on. Cries of awe filled your ears as the mayor stopped at each location to give a spiel on its history and purpose.

You looked up at the onyx sky studded with brilliant stars and the thin crescent moon. A strange feeling flared in the pit of your stomach. 'Shouldn't it be day by now? It feels like hours have reeled by...'

The group stopped once again as the mayor turned around to face the curious newcomers.

"So here, dear outsi- I mean visitors, is the newspaper centre. It has been a reliable source of information since its establishment last century..."

You looked up at the skyscraper behind him. A thick layer of dust veiled its architectural magnificence. Below the building, tumbleweed rolled along the cracked ground, adding to the desert-like atmosphere of the barren area, save for the lush green bushes lining the vicinity of the land.

"This part of the town is due for a major makeover this coming month, so I pray you look forward to that..."

You drowned out the mayor's voice, which was dripping with grandeur, as you planned your investigation and, most important of all, your return home.

'Since the council must now be on guard more than before, thanks to Turnip Head, I should take it slow.' You glanced up at the mayor.

'Maybe get his trust somehow. Then he can show me how the town works, what happens to the visitors and how I can get home without my memory being wiped.' You looked to where the mayor was pointing behind him, to see another skyscraper adjoined to the newspaper centre. It was covered with windows, where people behind the glass sat hunched over a computer.

An idea burst in your head.

'Or I can get a job here, write a few pieces, get a good reputation then make an excuse to go back to my hometown to "work on another project". In the meantime, I'll gather information from my co-workers and BOOM achievement unlocked: fix brother's bankruptcy. Perfect plan- where did everyone go?'

You found yourself completely alone, standing in the middle of an empty expanse of dirt and dust. The air was dead silent and you felt a pair of eyes burning into your back. Looking behind you, you saw a row of bushes rustling though there was no wind. You held your breath and stood still, when you barely heard faint, uneven breathing. You looked around frantically until you saw the collection of heads walking in the distance.

"Wait up!"

You ran up to the back of the crowd, and squished your way into the middle, yet you still felt the same intense gaze at the back of your head. 'Ignore it, Y/N. It's probably in your head. Calm thyself.'

In your peripheral vision, you saw a familiar mop of purple hair looking down at his hands with a wide smile. You glared at his stupid grin, silently blaming him for making your situation even more difficult than it was, until you looked closely at what he held in his hands. A strangely familiar baby blue cover...with 'Name: Y/N L/N' etched on it in neat handwriting.

Wait.

'Is that...?'

...It was.

Your heart throbbed against your rib cage. While side-stepping, you slowly reached your arm towards the object, occasionally stopping. Before you could touch the book's narrow spine, he turned to you. His eyes narrowed as he stared your outstretched arm, following it to your face, a nervous smile plastered on it.
