New Bostin High School

Freshman Orientation Day...

“Good morning, new students of New Bostin High

“Good morning, new students of New Bostin High.  My name is Principal Marlé, and this is Vice Principal Simon," Marlé announces as Vice Principal Simon waves to the students.

“The general rules here at New Bostin High are 1. Blah blah blah no bullying…” Marlé drones on as John zones him out.

Why can’t I just be homeschooled?!
Dad can teach me to write or something...anything but this bullsh*t.

As John is in thought, a boy leans over to him.

“Hey, isn’t this boring or what?” the boy whispers.

“Hm?  Oh yeah.  This orientation thing IS pretty boring.  Why do we have to go through all this when we’ve already learned the same set of rules from two schools?  I wish I were homeschooled...” John complains.

“Yeah, I get what you mean.  Homeschooling doesn’t sound like a bad option now that you say it.  My name is Hugo. Nice to meet you.”
“I’m John.  Likewise," John says as they shake hands.

“So what’s your ability?” John asks.

“Ah, my ability is Partial Invisibility," Hugo replied.

“A partial ability?  I’ve never heard of that.  I thought it was all or nothing.” John says, puzzled.

“What I mean is that I can turn invisible, fully, but I flicker every so often.  Meaning you can see the outline of me.  What’s yours?" Hugo asks.

John struggles to answer, his eyes at his shoes.

“I…
uh...hm…
Can I not say?" John stutters.

“Why, are you a cripple?”

“No!”

“Prove it.”

John eyes turn into a bright orange as he glares at Hugo.

“Oh...heh...sorry about that.  I just want to feel better about my level.  To be honest, it’s pretty embarrassing,” Hugo laughs.

“I won’t ask about your level if you don’t ask about mine.  But I will tell you my ability," John says reluctantly.

“Go on.”

“Well...you see, even I don’t know what it is, but it seems to be a form of ability replication.  When I get hit with someone’s ability, or vice versa, I somehow gain that person’s ability. Don’t ask me how or why, because I don’t even know.

It’s best that people learn on their own about my ability,
So don’t tell anyone you know
OR don’t know
About the words that came out of my mouth," John warns.

“Oh, I have no trouble keeping secrets.  I have no one to spread it to.” Hugo says nervously.

“Let’s talk about the school’s ability policy," Vice Principal Simon continues as everyone leans forward and listens intently.

“If you have an ability that is not associated with combat, you may use it OUTSIDE of your normal classes.”

A group of the audience breaths a sigh of relief, including Hugo.

“However...if you have a combat based ability, you may NOT use it in any of your classes or on school grounds.  Punishment for using a high-tier combat ability will result in suspension or expulsion depending on the situation.  The one situation you may use it in is PE. There, we have a specifically tailored arena to...vent, for lack of a better word.
Anyone with uncontrollable or unknown ability types should see Ms. Grant, the school secretary.  She will read your ability and place you in a specific class tailored to your ability," Simon explains.

Sh*t.
I’m half and half.
If they find out who I am and what it is, this could get serious.

“Hugo.  Turn invisible," John whispers.

“What?! Why?!” Hugo whispers back.

“If they find out what it is, I could be done for.  They might quarantine me. They could wipe my ability away. Please.”

I don’t want to end up like him.

“I don’t see where you’re going with this, but okay," Hugo says as he fades away.

“Okay, now punch my arm.  That way I can replicate. There needs to be some force applied to trigger the replication.”

Hugo punches John’s arm lightly, and John fades with Hugo.

“Let’s go.”

John and Hugo make sure that no one is looking.  With Principal Marlé checking his watch, John and Hugo quickly slip out the door.

About a minute later...

Vice Principal Simon uses Sense, his ability, and smirks.  He whispers to Marlé.

"Someone's missing."

He uses Sense again.

"Make that two people."
