Chapter 10 accident

Start from the beginning

"Oh really? You want me to check it out?" He asks raising an eyebrow. "Yes, and could you s-sleep in my room tonight? Just so I'm safe." She asks in a small voice.  He looks over at me and I nod. "Go on, I've done my share of sleeping in her room,"  He gets out of bed and picks Skye up and goes down the hall. I shut off the light and try to go to sleep. I can hear Shawn whispering to Skye down the hall and feel a sense of comfort that he's home. Maybe things will work out for us after all.

Shawn POV

Three Weeks  Later

Things between Zoë and I are going better, just in time for me to leave for tour again. I'm determined to not fall back into the rut we were in. Being home recently has been great I've been going to Skye's hockey games and have watched what feels like every princess movie ever.

I roll over to see Zo fast asleep next to me, her face looks so relaxed as she rolls over and cuddles against me. I reach for my phone on the nightstand and try not to wake her.  Yikes, I have rehearsals in an hour, how did I not hear my alarm? I go to get up when I feel her stirring. "Morning." She says her voice groggy. "Hi."

"Where are you going?" She asks yawning. "Rehearsal I overslept," I reply sliding out of bed and going into the closet. "Oh, can you take Skye with you? She doesn't have school today and I have class." She says sleepily. "Sure, does she have hockey today?" I ask. "Yeah, but I can pick her up and take her cause it's later."

"Sounds good, she's always been begging me to come to a rehearsal and see what I do." I pull on a shirt and some skinny jeans and head into the bathroom. "Can you get her up and dressed?" I call into the room. "Sure."  I brush my teeth and wash my face before heading downstairs and making some coffee and putting my guitar in the trunk.  A while later a very sleepy six-year-old waddles down the stairs her eyes half-open her curls in a messy bun.

"Where are we going?" She whines. "Your going to watch me rehearse for the tour today isn't that fun?" She wakes up a little at this her eyes widening.

"I get to see you sing?"  She whispers incredulously. "Uh-huh but we got to get going soon so I'm not late." She runs into the kitchen when I hear the movement of a chair or stool across the floor and get up.  I walk in to see my daughter balanced on a stool to reach the top shelf of pop tarts her fingers just barely touching the box as she stands on her tiptoes face screwed up in concentration. I sigh. "Skylar Elise Mendes." She freezes and turns around and almost falls over as I  lift her up and set her on the ground.

"What did we say about if you want something high up?"

"To ask you or mommy, but  she can't reach it either." She says innocently. I try not to laugh at her burn towards Zoë's height ( even if we both know it's true) and try to put on my serious disciplining face. "I just wanted a pop tart before we go to  practice." She says with big puppy dog eyes.  "I know but I don't want you falling off that stool and hurting yourself okay princess?" She nods.  "Now let me get it, you want to go put your things in the car?"

"Okay!" I watch her run-up to her room and move the stool back to its spot at the island and get down the box of pop tarts and get some for both of us. "Someone is excited," Zoë says coming downstairs. "She tried to climb up on a stool to get these." I indicate to the box.

"I was wondering why you're used her whole name." She laughs. "So I asked her what did we say about reaching something up high and she dissed you."

"My six year old how so?" Zo asks leaning against the counter. I tell her what Skye says and her jaw drops before she starts laughing. "At least we know the kids honest."  She says just as Skye comes downstairs with her backpack on. "Ready!"
