Thad is never sure if he's father is really there watching him closely and disapproving or if it's just his mind playing tricks on him. But it feels all two real along with the present and past blows and words.

Everytime his father just seems to just appear he tries to please him.  Reason with him, impress him and when he's most desperate plead.

Then one day he does it too loudly and someone overhears him.  " He was here, my fathef was right there." He answered a little afraid. But the room was completely empty and there's proof he was the only speedster inside of it. He had been responding to no one.

It's easy to realize how Thad hallucinates his father, paranoid that one day he will be punished. That he would pay. That his mind could betray him, and twist things to put him in constant terror.
