Bethany's POV

"Cayden had some bleeding in his brain. That's what caused his heart to stop. We rushed him into surgery and we were able to stop the bleeding. However, his brain has swelled so much that we had to temporarily remove a piece of his skull. We are not sure yet but we think that when he wakes he will have major memory loss. We also don't know yet if it's permanent or temporary. Just prepare for the worst, we'll keep you updated." The doctor told Ryan and I hours later. With all the crying I've been doing I had no more tears left. Instead I was reduced to quite sobs as Ryan held me in his arms and cried with me.

His best friend and the love of my life was about to die and there was nothing that I could do to stop it. I wish it would have been me instead of him. He didn't deserve this. Ryan didn't deserve to go through this again either. After what happened to his sister this must be harder on him than me. I had to get us out of her. As much as I wanted to stay I couldn't just sit around and wait for him to die.

"Hey how about we get out of here for a while?" I looked up at Ryan. He was still crying and it surprised me that he wasn't even trying to hide it. Most guys I knew would be to ashamed to let people see or know that they were crying.

"I don't know, I kinda want to stay here in case anything happens." He ran his hand through his hair, something I found him doing a lot. His hair was almost long enough to cover his eyes but no quite that long.

"I'll give the doctors my number in case anything happens. I just need to get out of here." I pulled out a small piece of paper from my pocket that was in there from school. I tore a small piece off and wrote my cell number on it with one of the many pens that were laying on some of the tables in the waiting room.

"If anything happens to Cayden call me immediately." I handed one of the nurses my number. She stuck it into a file she had in her hands and dashed off towards Cayden's room.

"Where do you live? I'll take you home." I shook my head. I didn't want to go home. My mom would be there and she would start asking me questions and I just wasn't ready to deal with that yet.

"I don't think either of us should be alone right now. Are your parents home?"

"No they are out of town. It wouldn't matter anyway I can just go over to Brooke's." He looked down at the floor like he was unsure of something.

"No you wont. You and Brooke got into a fight didn't you? I can tell by the look on your face. What happened?" He ran his fingers through his hair again, looked behind him then finally settling his eyes on me. He was staring at me intently.

"You know what, we'll go to my house. Besides I think I have a lot of apologizing to do." He smiled at me for the first time since this whole thing with Cayden happened and I smiled right back at him.

"I can't wait." He bowed to me and offered me his hand just like he did the night of Cayden's party.

"My lady if you would please accompany me to my house, our chariot awaits." I hesitated for a moment recalling what happened that night which was only about a week ago. Ryan seemed to sense this also"tis okay my lady, I shall not hurt you. I promise." I laughed when he spoke in a horrible British accent. I placed my hand in his and let him led the way.

I was beginning to think that Ryan and I were going to be really good friends.
