"I'll be right down," Victor said jumping out of his chair and throwing on his lab coat, putting out his cigarette. He bounded out of the room and rushed across the hallway. A thousand thoughts rushed through his head. He couldn't believe it was finally complete. He had been waiting months for this. He never even knew if it was even possible.
Victor pushed open two sliding doors, emerging in a large laboratory. There were computer terminals and desks with random notes and scribbles on pieces of paper lining the walls of the circular lab. The ceiling was large and domed, with the illusion of glass walls that displayed a large out door field and clear blue day.
Regardless of the sun outside, the lab was dark. The brightest source of light came from a small crystal, in the middle of the room. It was very large, with a pill capsule shape but not as smooth. It had small jagged edges. It was clear and bright with a green vein running along the vertical length while two separate parallel horizontal silver line crossed over the horizontal front, making it look like an H that had fallen to the side. It covered most of the air space in the room and was slowly rotating.
Victor walked up to it slowly, basking in its glory. He reached out and touched it, his hand going right through the crystal. He knew it would, it was just a hologram projection of a much much smaller crystal below it. The actual size of the object was ruffly the size of a grain of sand, not any larger. Victor slapped his hand across the projection, sending it rotating around as if Victor was merely spinning a basketball on his finger.
This was the entire backbone of their research. That single tiny rock was a new element called Echoforiem. It was found a few years back when Victor's father was traveling. From careful research and trial and error, they had extracted genetic bio-life form data from it. By connecting it to a subjects DNA, it gave them stronger mental capacity to be able to dominate control over a form of science. The subjects brain waves and DNA determined how they would shape that knowledge to their advantage.
Test subject 1569-Beta-A for example. As a child, before the implant of the Echoforiem into her DNA structure, she had been tested for IQ, physical strength, problem solving and many other tests. She had tested very high in intellectual and brain function, which lead to her being used for the Titan project. She, due to her lack of physical strength, was not going to be chosen for the project before the Echoforiem took root and she was able to lift over two hundred pounds as a one year old infant with her mind. The Echoforiem would only strengthen the dominate gene in the body and cause that to grow super naturally.
The rotation of the hologram caught David's eye, who was still sitting silently in front of a computer typing quickly. It was only a quick glance out of the corner of his eye but still enough to catch his attention. He looked over and waved two fingers towards himself, gesturing for Victor to approach. Victor complied, knowing that only David could pull off something like that. Anyone else who tried that kind of disrespect would be fired and worse. David was his best and only friend in the lab.
As Victor approached, he noticed David's physical condition. His eyes looked bloodshot, probably from staring at his computer and lack of sleep. His blading dark hair was a mess sticking up on end regardless of how many times David ran a hand over it in when he momentary stopped typing. When he picked up again, his fingers were a blur along the keyboard, typing over a hundred words a minute. He was well built, thin and tall, his chair on the lowest setting but still looking taller than Victor as he approached.
David stopped typing and took off his glasses, and rubbed his temples slowly. He then looked over at his friend and smiled, which was something rare for him. He never smiled unless he had achieved something worth smiling about. His facial expression showed that he had indeed achieved that goal. Victor pulled up a chair and sat on it, backwards, leaning on the backrest, his full attention on David.
He didn't say anything but rather just stared at Victor before reaching into a small backpack and gathering a small vial of a dark liquid. He shook it up and watched the liquid swirl around before the dark void came to a halt. Victor reached out a hand longingly for it. David handed it to him and watched as he swirled it around the same as he had done previous. It felt warm in Victor's hand, almost like it had just stopped boiling. He swirled it again but still felt the residual heat.
"Is it suppose to be this hot?" Victor asked. David shrugged his shoulders in confusion and then spoke for the first time, his booming voice filling the lab.
"We don't know exactly why that is. We figure it wont do much harm, only that the person drinking it might feel some light burning in their throat but that should pass." David said taking the vial back and putting it in a secure padded box.
"How many more are there?" Victor asked, already knowing the answer and dreading it. The news was still shocking but he had anticipated it.
"There is no more, this is it." David said, confirming his suspicions. "This is all we could make. Just enough for one."
"And you are sure it works?" Victor asked, his voice just above a whisper.
"Yes, I am 99% positive," David replied confidently. "I am sure its 100% but with out testing it, I cant give you the other 1%." Victor nodded, understanding.
"What does," he started but before he could finish, his wrist watch beeped once and he looked down at its face. A small picture of a woman in her early thirties with long blond hair looked back at him. He pressed the picture once and it was replaced with a live video feed of her.
"What is it Patty?" Victor asked, annoyed he was interrupted. He then noticed in the background commotion and that Patty looked overwhelmed.
"Doctor, they insisted." She stammered out first but then caught her breath. "They demanded, they wanted a rematch, I had no choice. I had to give it to them. They are starting now. I just thought you should know."
"Well, it would be great if I could know the who and the what if you wouldn't mind," He said rolling his eyes.
"Those who call themselves the Titans," Patty stammered again, looking like she was running. "They got pass all defenses, they say they want a rematch." Victor nodded once.
"Well, don't just stand there babbling like an idiot, give it to them," He said and shut off the connection before Patty could stammer out whatever she was going to say. Victor stood up and walked to the window, looking out at an artificial world. He then started walking for the door.
"Come now David," He said pushing the door open. "You don't want to miss the fireworks."
