Chapter 25: Wanted

Start from the beginning

"H-Hey!! Stop it!!" You laughed. You picked the little dog up under the arms and held him out in front of you. He reminded you of Sumo. Of course, if it was Sumo who had just bounded up to you, you probably would have been crushed. Other than the differences in size, they both had the same excited shine in their eyes. You felt a slight pang of nostalgia, remembering the Lieutenant and Sumo. You wondered what they would be doing now.

A little girl darted through the bushes.

"Pickle!!"

The dog perked his ears up at the sound of the girl's voice, and darted from your hands towards her.

"Mommy!! Mommy!! I found Pickle!" The little girl giggled as the dog licked her face. A middle aged woman parted the shrubbery and walked through. She put a leash on the dogs collar and gave the end of it to the little girl. You still remained sitting on the ground. The woman walked over to you.

"Sorry about our dog... he gets quite excited around strangers," She laughed, holding her hand out to you. "Are you alright?"

You stared at her hand for a moment. Finally, she raised her eyes, and looked at you, your face now clear and uncovered, the sun illuminating every feature. She drew her hand back.

"You!!" With shaking hands, the woman pulled a pamphlet from her purse, unfolding it, and comparing the image of your face with the printed one. You were already scrambling to your feet, running from the woman.

"Police!!" She screeched. "Someone, call the police!!"

You were already sprinting through the park. Other's heard her cries, and began to chase after you.

You darted out of the park and across the road, cars screeching around you, barely avoiding a collision. You heard other voices

"It's her!!!"

"Someone stop her!!"

You gulped, trying to remember your police training that seemed a lifetime away. As you ducked between buildings and across crowded streets, you started to imagine the way Connor pursued deviants back then. You tried to mimic the way he used to move, your feet and arms speeding up. You rounded a corner onto an unexpectedly crowed street. The calls from behind you alerted them of your presence, and they all stared at you, looks filled with rage."In the end, everyone just wants to have someone to blame when things take a turn for the worst."

They wanted someone to blame for all of this; and right now, you were the perfect target for it. Their greedy hands reached for you. You screamed and kicked blindly, trying to step over them and get through the people all reaching for you. Strong hands gripped you from behind, some grabbed you from the front. You tried to remember Connor's defense techniques. One hand gripped your wrist. You twisted your hand and forced it out. Breathing deeply, you focused on the hands gripping your waist. You moved your elbow back, hearing a crack as it collided with something. Then you kicked back, hitting his knee. As the man was thrown back, he gripped your backpack, ripping it off with him. You still had the knife Ralph gave you, but you were unsure of if you should use it. These people most likely had guns. If each one of them pulled out a gun, then it would all be over.

You shoved through them. If you were going to go down, it wouldn't be without a fight. All you saw in your head was Connor. Connor's face. Connor's words. Connor's subtle smile. You had to reach him. "Connor!!" You screamed, even though you knew no one would hear. You fought out of the crowds, and made a move to run. You didn't notice the uneven ground between the pavement and gutter. Your foot skidded between it, twisting at an unnatural angle, causing you to cry out in pain. You fell onto the road, rolling into an intersection. You gritted your teeth, desperately trying to rise on your damaged ankle, but to no avail. You realized that it was too late; this is where you would die. These thoughts flashed through your mind in a second as you saw the cars speeding towards you, too fast to stop. You closed your eyes, letting your thoughts only be of him.

Strong arms suddenly gripped your waist. Thinking it was the man from earlier, you tried to fight it at first, until you heard your saviors voice.

"Don't move."

You watched in awe as you were lifted out of the way of the speeding vehicle. Suddenly you were being carried up the side of a building, and the people below now raised their fists in fury as they seemed to turn into ants. Finally, knowing you were safe, you turned to see whose arms you were in. You gasped.

The man had a slight smile on his face, a sure and determined look. His dark chocolate coloured hair shone slightly in the light. His russet eyes pierced into yours, as if he was seeing past you, into your very being. He wore a uniform consisting of a grey jacket, dark tie and pants, with a blue armband on his right arm. He held you tight to his chest, as he leapt between rooftops of buildings.

"Connor!!" You gasped, wrapping your arms tighter around his neck. He leaned his face into your hair. You couldn't believe your eyes. Maybe you died and this was heaven. Yet with the wind still whipping around you, and the pain you still felt from your ankle, you knew you were very much alive. And so was Connor. The relief washed over you, flooding your entire being with joy at the sight of the man you loved.

You felt the wind whip further around you as he leapt down another building, so fast that you were sure that anyone who blinked would have missed it.

"I'm so glad... I mean, I thought..." You smiled at Connor. He brushed your hair off your face.

"Not now... let's get away from here first."

Connor landed lightly beside a white car on a secluded street. As he gently helped you into the car, he quickly got in beside you. As he commanded the car to leave, you watched as the few people in the street soon disappeared from view. You turned and smiled at Connor. He smiled back, squeezing your hand in his. And suddenly, although you were far from your apartment, and far from Jericho, a thought came into your head: you were home.
