As if the universe had read my mind, the door on the left wall swung opened and Newt stumbled in, looking embarrassed for some reason. I heard laughter from beyond the door.
"Bloody hell, just shut up already, you guys!" Newt yelled back at them, then closed the door. The laughters ceased to a dull.
"What was that about?" I asked, getting out of bed.
"Nothin'," Newt muttered. His cheeks were still pink. "Just the boys bein' klunk-heads."
I shoved my hands into my pant pockets, rocking back and forth on the balls of my feet. "Soo... what are you doing here?"
"I... I wanted to, uh..." Newt rubbed the back of his neck, his eyes flitting back and forth, avoiding my gaze. "I wanted to talk to you. About us. You know - uh, before we escaped the Maze and stuff."
"Oh."
Newt sighed. "Look, I'm sorry. I'm sorry for shouting at you like that, especially in front of everyone. I was mad, but the least I could have done was pull you aside and speak to you in private. Instead I went off on ya in public like a twat and... and - I just feel really bad about it. I'm sorry."
His apology took me by surprise. I wasn't expecting him to apologise so quickly, especially since he was practically the only person I knew who was just as stubborn as I was.
"I-I'm sorry too," I admitted. "And I'm not saying it just for the sake of saying it. I really am sorry. I should have listened to you instead of running off into the Maze like a shucking idiot... I understand why you got so mad at me. I do. And I promise I won't do it again."
A strange tug pulled at the corner of Newt's lips. "Of course you won't. We're out of the Maze, aren't we? It'd be darn impossible to run into the maze now that we've been rescued from it."
And just like that, the tension diffused between us. A grin cracked through my face and Newt smiled back, evidently relieved that we were no longer fighting.
"Can you at least promise me something?" He asked.
"What is it?"
Newt swallowed, his eyes looking at me seriously. "Please, don't... don't ever do anything reckless like that again. Please. I know you said you won't do anything of the sort again, but I just need you to promise me."
I stared back at him. His eyes were a warm shade of brown, dark in dim light but golden and vibrant under the sun. A small sigh escaped me.
"Okay," I said, my gaze glued to the tiled floor in shame. "And I'm sorry. I really am. I-"
"It's okay," he whispered. And before I knew it, he stepped forward and wrapped his arms around me, his hand sliding up to my neck as he pulled me to him. I kissed him back, his breath warm against my cheek. I heard the door open and I pulled back quickly: Minho's head was peeking through the door at us.
"Everything going alright?" He said, trying not to smirk and failing.
"Fuck off!" I grabbed the nearest pillow and threw it at his face.
He laughed and ducked before it could hit him.
"Let them have their fun!" Someone yelled from the other side. I heard laughter. Minho gave us one last smirk before closing the door.
"Stupid," I muttered.
Newt smiled at that. He held my face in his hand, grazing my cheek with his thumb fondly. "We should get some sleep now. Who knows what bloody nonsense is going to be thrown our way tomorrow. You want me to stay with ya?"
I smirked. "You sure? Our friends might take it the wrong way."
I laughed as Newt's cheeks heated up.
"Oh, just slim it already."
I laughed again and pulled him to my bed. He laid on me, snuggling into the crook of my neck as I hugged him. He smelled of fresh shampoo. We laid there for what seemed like hours, our synchronised breathings like harmonious music in the deafening silence of the room.
"Newt?" I whispered, not sure if he was still awake.
"Yeah?" He muttered, stirring slightly. I tried not to think about how his breath made the skin on my neck tingle.
"When the doctors healed my shoulder, I think they... I think they somehow managed to return my memories."
Newt sat up immediately, his eyes wide with alert. "They gave you back your memories?" He said. "But how?"
"I don't know, I just... I just wanted you to know. I didn't want to keep it a secret."
"How much do you remember?"
"Not-Not much," I admitted. "I mean, some parts are coming back, and I remember a few bits of my life before - you know, the Maze."
"Do you remember me back then?" Newt asked softly.
My lips tugged into a soft smile. "How could I forget? You were one of my best friends."
Newt seemed to relax at that, and he leaned back into me once more. I didn't want the conversation to end - I wanted to talk more about my memories, about my life before the Maze, about everything had happened before we were sent up into the Glade. But a few moments later, I heard soft snoring from Newt.
I smiled again and kissed his forehead. "Good night, ya sleepy bugger," I whispered.
