The Al Ghofran war (Yom Kippur war), 1973

Israel against Syria and Egypt - Anwar Sadat as the ‘leader’ of the Arab world had to recover the losses Israel took from them. Arab leaders launched rockets into the occupied territories on the Jewish holy day (Yom Kippur) in an attempt to recapture the stolen Sinia and Golan heights. The US (supporting Israel) and the Soviet Union (supporting Syria and Egyot) supported their allies respectively.

On October 22nd a UN ceasefire was ordered and then on the 24th only two days later, Israel managed to push out Syrian and Egyptian forces and maintain the Sinai peninsula and the Golan heights. A second ceasefire was ordered on October 25th to end the war.

This was a tragic loss not only for Syria and Egypt, but the Palestinians who were relying on the neighbouring Arab countries, to reclaim their stolen land.
