"Once upon a time, there used to be beautiful ocean waters on this planet earth. In those waters, there lived our enchanting marine life which is now very much extinct. The villain of this story is us, the humans, who made use of an enormous amount of plastic. We were warned of what would happen, but we did it anyway. And oh those poor fishes. We truly are murderers, not only of those fishes but also of the happiness of a lot of people." My mother looked at me, her head held down with guilt and her eyes welling up with tears.

I admit I was jealous. And angry. Angry, that our parents could be so careless.

"I'm sorry darling. I would do anything to go back in time and stop all this from happening." She sighed sadly and her expression was one of regret. I gave her a sympathetic look.

Suddenly my mind travelled back to this morning when Liam, my best friend, told me that his father, who's a scientist, has invented something unrealistic, a time traveler.

I call Liam to tell him I want to meet him in his father's factory and quickly bike my way to the destination.

I enter the factory and meet Liam who was standing there with his arms crossed.

"Liam, I need a favor." He raises his eyebrows at this as if asking me to continue.

"I-uh want to travel back in time and save all the rivers in the world from becoming dumpsters."

He looked at me for a moment and then guffawed loudly. I narrow my eyes at him.

"You think it's that easy? Answer my one question Leah, what makes you think that the people who once didn't understand that using plastics is not advisable, will understand when you ask them to?" He questioned.

"I probably can't. But I'm willing to take a chance Liam. For me, for you and for all the people who want to once again have a good time at the beaches with their children. I hope that one day I can see our river and ocean waters clean and beautiful with live fishes and that when I grow up and have my child, I don't have to repeat the story my mother recited to me. Just give me a chance. I will do whatever it takes." I answer him honestly and my eyes water.

"Okay fine."

"This happened a long time ago. That day I couldn't time travel. The time machine didn't work and I was heartbroken. But then I understood that time travelling was not the point. Changing was. Even if I couldn't change the past, I still could change the present. So the moral of the story is that-learn from the past and change the future."

With that I finished my speech at my book launch and I could hear a loud applause. I descend the stairs and hug Liam who laughed and ruffled my hair.
