Chapter 17: Crescent Moon

Start from the beginning

"I may have collaborated with the people behind the plot to kill you before I met you." I was ashamed. For making assumptions and being so hungry for power then. She showed me in less than two days how strong woman can be, while I was one of those assholes talking bad about her before even meeting her.

"I know. I also know who Troy is now and I will make him pay," she sneered as she went back to gazing at the moon. "What is your pack to you?"

"My pack is my pack, I lead them. I make sure they are happy and safe." I was caught off guard by her question. It had nothing to do without conversation. Packs are a way of living for werewolves, safety in numbers.

"That's a shame. You see? My pack is my family, that is why there's no room for traitors. I must protect my pack, not just lead but ensure that every single one them feels welcomed and like family here." Her words brought my thoughts to a deeper level of thinking. I admire her views and wish I was more like her.

"I never thought of it like that before," I shrugged. I envied her compassion and desire of a pack being family. She was a true wolf at heart.

"Most Alphas and Lunas don't. They lived among men too long and forgotten the tradition of wolves. That's why the fact that females are just as strong as men were somehow forgotten when humans shared their ignorance and the domination of men to our kind." I could feel her anger seething through each breathe.

"How do you know so much?" I was astonished by her knowledge. The more I got to know her the more I wanted her to truly workout as my mate. I knew I would have to work hard to gain her trust.

"Alpha Helsin, I've been around for several hundred human years. You think I just sat around la-la gacking?" She turned those beautiful grey eyes back to mine. I couldn't help but to admire the silver specs that floated in the dark grey, it was majestic.

"La-la gacking?" the word was so foreign to me. She gave a small smirk.

"Something I learned from humans. If we ever work out, and that a huge 'if', I will show you my collection of werewolf ancient history and stories."

"The Solstice packs have those? My pack never did, not the past few hundred years that I lived" I paused staring at the forest ground reflecting the moonlight. Debating how vulnerable I wanted to make myself so soon. I never showed vulnerability before, but I knew if I were to gain her trust, I had to be at some point. "I suppose that is why my pack has lost touch with true werewolf values, my parents burned down anything ancient before I could learn. They never taught me much as my mother became ill and my father went mad."

"Your mother was ill?" I hint of empathy was in her voice.

"Yes. She was hexed by a witch and my father went mad because of it and he lost his mind more after she passed," I felt my heart drop to my stomach at the memories. I didn't have many good memories of my mother, she was hexed when I was very young and it lasted years before it killed her. The torture drove her to torture me. Once she passed, my father had gone so mad he would take out his anger on me, beat me. "They never kept their promises..." I trailed off.

"That is why promises mean so much to you?" She looked at me wide-eyed, yet I couldn't tell what she was thinking. I nodded my head and sighed. I never told anyone about my parents or what happened. The pack just thought my parents went mad and eventually I had to put an end to it.

"I vowed to never be like them. Yet here I am, not really much better." I may have been different or awhile, but I realized I was no better than them when I became hungry for power.

"You keep your promises. Most people can't even do that," her words echoed in my mind. SHe had a point. "I must take my leave now. I am sure we will cross paths tomorrow," she said formally.

"Luna..." I trailed off nervously. "Do you want me to guard your doors tonight?" Something about Troy being out there with a plan to kill her made me unsettled, especially because he never told me his plan.

"I have guards at my doors already, thank you for the gesture though." Her mood was impossible to determine, she held a mask that was almost unbreakable.

"But can you trust those guards?" I insisted, following my urge to protect her. To try and influence her trust in me.

"You expect me to trust you over them?" She eyed me wearily.

"No. I would never expect you to trust me so soon. I just want to make sure you stay safe tonight."

"I'll tell you what. You can guard my door if it makes you feel better, but do not think I trust you. My guards will remain there with you at all times. Understood?"

"Yes, Luna." I couldn't help but grin slightly. The fact that she even allowed me had lifted my mood. Despite having everyone think I was a fraud now for not owning up to knowing I didn't kill Alpha Denver. She was worth it.
