Chapter One

Adam

It's been eleven years. Abigail and I are the only two that remember. We remember Aniala crying for her mother for countless minutes, then suddenly going still. We remember randomly being mysteriously placed outside a large building none of us had ever seen before, but Abby and I knew it was where we had just come out of. We remember Aiden, Addison, and Aaron not being there with us. We remember hearing the first explosion and running. We remember the sounds of tons and tons of explosions as we ran as fast as we could towards the surrounding forest, Aniala on my back crying. We also remember the years we've spent travelling, learning to make money in the towns we pass by, and raising Aniala. It's been tough, trying to get along on our own, but I think we've gotten along pretty well.

Abigail and I just wish we knew what happened to the three others.

Aniala

I followed Adam around the marketplace for a while. He was looking around for a quick job that he could do for someone for money. Abigail was doing the same thing, but on the other side of town. I'd always gone with Adam on his little trips into the towns we passed by, no clue. I've been doing it for as long as I can remember. I knew the rules: don't talk, don't look people in the eyes, and don't steal anything. I understood the last one, because stealing is wrong. But Abigail and Adam would never tell me why I had the other two rules. I went along with it anyway, though.

After being turned down for work a few times, Adam eventually found a job helping some man carry fruit to a small store. Adam told me I could help, too, so I did. It took a little while, but Adam talked to me as we walked back and forth carrying fruit from the cart to the store. He told me that we were going to pass another town soon that we've been to before; a long time ago, but we've been there. He said I wouldn't remember it, but it is really fascinating. I asked him with my thoughts how long we were staying here-usually we stayed in one place anywhere from two days to a month.

"About a week," he said smiling at me.

Good, I thought to him, I like it here. People here are...nicer somehow."

"I know," he replied. "I wish we could stay here a while longer. But this next town will be great, and there's a job there that we could make quite a bit of money from." And he smiled at me again.

We put the last two crates down in the back room of the shop, and then walked out into the main part of the store. The store owner came over to us and smiled. "You get all the crates in there okay?" he asked us.

"Yes, sir," Adam replied.

"Good, good," the man said. He led us over to the counter in the back and pulled out a bag of coins. Handing it to Adam, he said, "There you go. Thanks for helpin' out."

But then the man did something else no one had ever done before for us, he pulled out another bag of coins, only slightly smaller than Adam's, and handed it to me. "Here you go, lass. Thanks for helpin' out. Buy yourself somethin' pretty." And he smiled at me.

Then I looked in his eyes and smiled back. "Thanks you, sir," I said. Then closed my mouth and looked at Adam. Sorry.

He smiled the man. "Thanks," he said. Then we left the shop and started walking down the wide streets.

I waited until we were alone on a different street to talk. "I'm sorry, Adam. I forgot and thanked the man."

"Its fine, Aniala, don't worry about it." He said, but it seemed like something was wrong.

"Adam?"

"Yeah?"

"Why am I not allowed to talk to people, or look them in the eyes?" I asked for probably the zillionth time. I'd asked him a lot, but not in a while. But now I felt like I had to know.

When he didn't say anything, I stepped in front of him and turned around, stopping him. "I'm thirteen, Adam, I have a right to know. This is really stupid."

Adam ran his fingers through his hair and looked to his right. He sighed. "Can we talk about this later, Aniala? It's getting late, we have to find Abigail."

"No." Was all I said.

"Fine...Aniala, your voice, it's, well...not exactly normal. And the way your eyes change when you look directly at someone else's eyes is just weird. People will know you're different. And trust me, that's not good."

I looked at him like he was being stupid. My voice was completely normal, and so were my eyes. Is he feeling well today? "And why is that not good?" I asked.

"Because there have been people like us before. Not too long ago, either. And people weren't exactly okay with them." He told me.

"What do you mean, 'weren't exactly okay with them'?" I asked another question.

"They were killed, Aniala," he said meanly. He looked angry...and sad.

I gasped, "Really?" I could hardly manage a whisper.

"Can we drop it now?" Adam asked looking at his feet.

I stayed silent the whole way to the other side of town and then to the inn we were staying in. I think Abigail noticed, but she didn't say anything. I didn't say a word all night, and I had nightmares of scary people coming after me. It was terrifying.

I apologized to Adam in the morning, for making him tell me, but it said it was okay. He said he should've told me sooner anyway.

Abigail took me with her to go get some food later and asked me what happened. She hugged me, and said she was sorry. I asked her why and she said because I shouldn't have to know. She also said I was lucky that Adam had told me so little. It made me want to know more, but I knew that I would wish I didn't know if I did. So I kept quiet about it.

The week passed quickly, and Adam and Abby forgot about it. I didn't, but I pretended I did. Our last day came and Abigail and Adam went to go pay for the nights we'd stayed at the inn. I stayed in our room.

I was sitting on the bed, looking around the room for something to do, when I remembered what Adam had said about my eyes. Wondering if it would work in a mirror, I walked across the room to look at me reflection. I looked directly at the reflection of my blue eyes.

They began to change, switching to various shades of blue. It was barely noticeable, but it was defiantly happening.

Adam was right, I was obviously different. Had the man with the shop noticed it? I didn't see him because I kept my eyes on Adam for the rest of the time.

I went back to sitting on the bed, and looking around the room at nothing. It had been weird, but kind of pretty in a unique way. I wondered if that's how my voice was too. Definitely different, but pretty.

We walked all night to get to the other town. I asked Adam why we were walking instead of me teleporting everyone since this town was so far away. He never answered so I didn't ask. I was learning that I didn't want to know some things, but I think this one was actually just Adam trying to pretend we were normal, even though no one was near us on the endless, empty road.
