Chapter 19: From Ashes

Start from the beginning

"I wanted to save him..." You whimpered. "If I could, I would want everyone to survive... But... this time there was nothing I could do. It was much too late..."

Androids began snapping out of their trance, moving towards Bec to pull her away from you.

"If it was Connor you would find a way..." She snarled. "You would save the android you love, but you wouldn't think to save the android that I love!!" You watched in fear as the androids dragged Bec away.

"I'm so sorry..." You whispered. Bec stared up at you one more time, her eyes seeming to glow in her rage.

"YOU'RE NO SAVIOUR TO ME!!" She spat as you watched the androids pull her from the room. You flinched away, staring at your thirium stained hands. Was there really nothing you could do?

You gasped as you felt a hand on your shoulder. You wheeled around, hoping it was Connor. It was Simon, the blonde haired android that you hadn't spoken to often, but you knew was kind and considerate.

"You did all you could..." He murmured, staring at your worried expression. "We lost many... Lucy, Josh, among others..."

You moved forward so his hand fell from your shoulder.

"Why do they call me a saviour when I can't even save one android..." You muttered as you gazed at your shoes. "Bec was right; I am no saviour..." Your feet moved before you could stop yourself.

"[F/N], wait!" Simon called after you. You fled from the room. You needed some time alone with your thoughts.

---

Connor sat beside the place where Markus lay, as he watched you in his peripheral vision run out of sight from the doorway.

"Aren't you going after her?"

"No... I need to speak to you first."

"What business would you have with me?"

Connor took a long moment. He flicked a coin from hand to hand as he processed his thoughts.

"Do you think Jericho has a chance Markus?"

"What do you think?" He replied in a mechanical voice. "You're the RK800; I'm certain you have the answer to that." Connor caught the coin in one hand and paused.

"You still don't trust me," Connor murmured. Markus didn't respond. "I don't blame you... after everything I have done to androids... all those deviants I killed..." He paused. "I regret it... I was a machine; designed to accomplish a task... but I am not just a machine anymore..." Markus remained quiet. Connor wondered if he was still listening at all. He decided to assume he was.

"There are thousands of androids at the Cyberlife assembly plant," Connor heard Markus's rasping breaths catch. "If we could wake them up, they might join us and shift the balance of power..."

"You wanna infiltrate the Cyberlife Tower?" Markus gasped. Connor remained silent, and Markus took it as agreement. "Connor... that's suicide."

"They trust me," Connor insisted. "They'll let me in. If anyone has a chance of infiltrating Cyberlife, it's me."

"If you go there, they will kill you."

"When did you start caring?"

Markus hesitated, clearly surprised at the intrusive question; As if he was asking himself the same thing.

"When you became one of us..." Markus stared directly into Connor's dark eyes. Connor didn't break his gaze. "It's because of you and [F/N] that so many managed to escape... because you detonated the explosives. You did what I could not..." With what little strength he had, Markus grabbed Connor's wrist. "After all that, I can't let you go out there and get yourself killed."

"There's a high probability..." Connor muttered, moving his wrist out of Markus's grip. "But statistically speaking, there's always a chance for unlikely events to take place."

"Be careful..." Markus rasped, his LED flicking from amber to red and back again. "Don't die... at least not for her sake."

Connor stood up. Markus fell into rest mode once more, the red LED flicking back to amber and remaining that way. Connor paced towards the doorway. There was still time to see you again before he left.

---

The day had been exhausting. The moment you lay your head on the dusty mattress on the floor of the abandoned church, you fell into a deep sleep. That was where Connor eventually found you, curled up as tight as possible, knees under your chin. You shivered slightly, the draft from the broken windows chilling your body. Connor unbuttoned his coat, moving slowly towards you. He wrapped it carefully around your shoulders so you wouldn't wake up. "Connor..." You mumbled in your sleep. He smiled. Were you dreaming about him? That was one thing he couldn't see through analyzing your face. He brushed your hair off it. As he gazed at your sleeping face, he wondered if he would ever see it awake again. He wondered if he would ever see your beautiful [e/c] eyes again, your beautiful smile again, hear your soft voice again. Of course, there was always a probability for anything, but at this point, that probability was getting less and less possible. Maybe this would be the last time he would ever see you. He hated the thought of that.

Perhaps Cyberlife would capture him, take away his control, make him a machine again. But you would be safe; he would be certain of that. As he continued to gaze at your peaceful expression, he leaned forward, and pressed his lips to yours. It was a human response of love, but it felt suitable for the current moment. As he kissed your soft lips, he tried to memorize it, as best he could. If worse came to worse, he would take that memory with him. Then he pulled away, raising quietly to his feet, as you continued to sleep on.

"I will return for you..." He whispered, as if he was trying to convince himself, before turning, and disappearing into the darkness of the night, ingraining the image of your face into his mind.
