Alex places the bottle of coffee on the conveyor belt and checks his phone tiredly. The bag on his back is heavy and he longs for a warm, comfortable bed. Lost in daydreams, he barely notices the check out man talking to him.
Oh, hot damn.
"Any chance you wanna explain the need for coffee at 3am?" The man chuckles as he swipes it across the scanner.
Alex blinks and mentally curses his dangerously high heart rate. He shrugs and averts his eyes.
"Fair enough," the cashier laments. He drops the coffee into a bag and spins it around for Alex. Alex smiles as best he can for his awful state and hands the man just enough cash to cover the cost.
"Thank you," Alex says quietly, his voice rough with tiredness. The man, John he notices from the name tag, nods amiably, and Alex assumes their encounter to be over. He takes the bag from its hooks and starts to walk away, but John's voice stops him.
"Sir, may I ask why you have that backpack on?" When his voice is raised Alex catches the hint of a southern accent that drives chills up his spine.
He turns around slowly and meets the sapphire-like blue eyes. Holy shit, are they entrancing. "Homeless, as it would seem." Alex replies emotionlessly.
"Ah," John tilts his head and braces himself on the register, leaning forward. "What's a handsome guy like you doing without a place to stay?"
Alex bites his lip, feeling his cheeks heat up. "Well, one thing leads to another I suppose.." John nods.
"Perhaps it's strange, but if you want I live in a house far too big to be alone. I'd love the company."
"Oh, sir, that's too kind of you I couldn't-"
"It's entirely selfish of me. You are in need of a place to stay, I am in need of a companion. We both win. Yes?"
Alex narrows his eyes, hesitant. "Yes. Yes, I guess so." John smiles sweetly, and suddenly Alex has the feeling that for once everything will be okay.
"Perfect. My shift just ended so let's blow this stupid store."
John gathers his things and leads an uncertain Alex out to the parking lot. They come upon a fancy silver sports car that Alex can't name (cuz the author dunno car brands) and is positive can't possibly be John's until he unlocks it.
"Woah," Alex breathes. He's never seen anything quite so.. well, fancy.
"Yeah, sorry it's a bit much," John chuckles nervously. Contemplating why John would be embarassed to own this, Alex opens the passenger door cautiously and sinks inside, almost afraid he might break something.
"It's- no, no it's nice!"
"Yeah."
"How uh.."
"How do I afford this?" John finishes as he starts the car. They back up smoothly and turn onto the street. "Trust fund. Don't worry though, I'm not one of those stuck up rich bitches."
"Good to know. I mean, I sort of assumed, considering you're working at a grocery store and all."
"Don't remind me," John groans. "Actually, I was thinking about going back to South Carolina soon. Ditching this place."
"Oh, I hope I'm not keeping you here! It's alright you know, I can take care of myself, no need-" Alex says quickly.
"Nah, no worries. I just found a damn good reason to stay." John looks at Alex out of the corner of his eye, smiling. Alex smiles back, the heat rising up his neck and into his face almost unbearable. He turns his head to hide the blush and focuses his attention instead on the passing scenery.
