▬Today was the day.

                              
I closed my eyes and took a shaky breath. I didn't know how long I sat there in the cafeteria of WICKED headquarters. Everything I ever knew and cared about would soon be wiped from my mind anyway. What did it matter? 

                              
I buried my head in my hands, squeezing my eyes shut. The nervous, grim chatters of my friends resonated around me―but I heard none of it. After what seemed like an eternity, I felt a hand rest on my shoulder, friendly but firm.

                              
"Rosalind, we gotta go."

                              
I'd recognized that voice anywhere.

                              
"Come on, Rose," Newt said, his voice soft and quiet. "They're waitin'."

                              
I finally pulled my head away from my hands and looked up at Newt. My best friend was staring down at me with a grim expression, his mouth set in a tight line. His usually bouncy blond hair looked dull and flat against his head.
