Ruth

//CHAPTER ONE//

"How high are you, Nat?" I asked. She sat in a circle and I knew before I got there what they were doing.

"Don't you mean Hi how are you?" She covered her mouth and giggled. Great, now my ride is high. I rolled my eyes and walked off. I was done with these shit fraternity parties. I walked outside the house and onto the sidewalk. I felt bad for leaving Nat behind but fuck it I needed to leave. Apparently someone else did too.

"Ruth!" I hear a voice behind me. I turn around to the douche bag who had just tried to take me to his room.

I glared at him "What?"

"Why are you walking this late at night?"

"Why are you following me this late at night?" It was a rhetorical question. I didn't want the answer, I just wanted him to leave me alone.

"Why are you being so prissy?"

"I'm not being prissy"

"Then what are you-" He started

"Peachy."

"Look, I'm sorry let me drive you to your dorm." He rested his hand on the back of his neck.

"Why the fuck would you want to do that?" I asked. I was being such a prick to him. I wasn't usually like this but It kind of just came.

"Why the fuck do you curse so much?"

"Because I had a damn fucking shitty day." I half smiled. I was being totally stupid so, I couldn't help myself to smile at my incredibly witty reply.

He smirked "Look, I'm sorry about what I asked today,"

Or were you just sorry that I stuck up for myself?

"It's fine. Today just isn't my day." I ran my fingers through my hair.

"So can I drive you home?" He asked.

"You know what, why not?" I had no ride, and I guess if he tried anything I could sass him away.

"Cool."

I followed him as he walked to his car. He opened the door for me. Wow, Luke Hemmings actually doing something polite.

He started his car "So how come I've never seen you around?"

"We were in the same computer engineering class." I said as I gave a confused look.

He moved his eyebrows closer together. It was evident that he was thinking about the students in the class.

"Margaret?" He asked. I gulped and nodded slowly.

"You changed..." He said as he turned right. "In a good way, but you go by Ruth now?"

Obviously. "Yeah, Ruth."

"Why Ruth?"

"It's my middle name," I began "I couldn't really make a nickname out of Margaret except for like Peggy or something but that doesn't quite fit." I realized I was talking too much and pushed my glasses back up my nose.

"Why do you wear those?" He asked.

"What? My glasses? So I can see..." I replied.

"You look better, I mean prettier without them"

"Too bad I wore these today, huh." I said as I twirled my glasses around my fingers.

"Too bad." He stopped the car in front of my dorm.

"Thanks for the ride." I said as I began to get out of his car.

"Wait, It wasn't free."

"You really want me to pay?" I rolled my eyes and searched my purse. I knew I shouldn't have agreed.

"Well if you insist, but I was just gonna ask you for your number"

I looked up; he was smiling as he sat in the drivers side with his hands still on the wheel.

"My number, you want it?" I bit my lip.

He didn't want my number last year when I so desperately wanted his.

"I would be honored to have your number,"

"Only because I don't have cash on me right now," I said confidently. I stood taller, pushed my glasses up again and took a pen out of my bag.

"Hold your arm out," I said. He held out his arm and as I wrote, I could feel him staring at me. I pulled the camisole up underneath my shirt. As much as I would have loved him to check me out a year ago, I put on the act that I didn't care.

"You have really pretty eyes." He said.

I raised an eyebrow "They're brown."

"Doesn't matter, I like them." He studied his arm. It was covered in black ink.

"Sorry, I write really big" I laughed to myself.

"No, It's okay." He smiled "I like it."
