Makayla
After searching my house for twenty minutes, expecting them to jump out and scare the living life out of me, I finally came to the consensus that they were gone. I had no idea where, but I knew they were gone. Then I felt my phone buzz in my back pocket. Oh! Maybe it's her!
But it definitely was not her, instead, it was a call from an unknown number. Of course! Of course, Sam would try to prank call me, well, it's not going to work!
"Hello?" I strange male's voice said. So maybe this isn't Sam...
"Hi, Sam, just want you to know, this little prank call, well, it's not going to work," I replied, about to set the phone down.
"This isn't Sam! This is your experiment host. Greetings, child!" The strange voice boomed. "You may be wondering, where the heck did everyone go? I can answer that. Today marks the first day of let's call it... the experiment. Now, you may be thinking, the experiment is to take everyone I know away from me? But it's not. This experiment is to see how you, twelve-year-old kids, can live alone for three hundred and sixty-five days. Your goal is to make it as long as possible without disaster, food shortage, and more. But you don't have to worry, if it gets super bad, we will remove you. The last one, or ones standing win! Now, have a lovely evening." And the call hung up.
This can't be real, can it? My thoughts wondered. No parents, no friends, no siblings, no-
"SHUT UP, STUPID MIND!" I screamed, enraged.
Then I remembered... I finally turned twelve yesterday, while most of my friends turned thirteen a week or two before. Although I'm the baby of the group, I couldn't ask for better friends.
My friends. They were all older than I was. I was alone, I had nobody. I started having a mini panic moment when my phone rang again. Not this again! My stupid mind screeched, but this time it wasn't the unknown number. It was my cousin, Faith.
"Faith" I screamed, excitement wiping all other emotions out of my system.
"Makayla! I am so glad to hear your voice!" She screamed, happily.
"Me too! I thought I had nobody, I totally forgot we are both twelve." I said, feeling stupid.
"You're a goose, I turned twelve yesterday." She said, laughing.
"Happy belated birthday! Where are you? At your house?" I asked.
"Yes, I presume you are too." She said as I realized it would be very hard to get to her. She lives in Arizona, while I live in Virginia.
"How do we get to each other Faithie?" I asked, nervously, "I can't do this alone, and you know that."
"Neither of us can," She said quietly. "This is bigger than anything that we've ever been through before."
"Uh, even getting our teeth pulled? Heck na!" I responded.
"Makayla, I'm being serious," Faith said, in a low, nervous tone. "Is your portable charger fully charged?"
"Yes," I replied.
"How about your Segway, is that fully charged too?" She asked.
"Mmhmm." I replied, remembering that the Segways we had both gotten for a surprise Christmas present could last for ten hours. "Faithie, you're a genius!"
"I know I am," She said, as we both started to laugh. "I'm gonna hang up now, pack up some things, and keep your phone charged. I'll call you tomorrow when it is time to go!"
"Okay! Bye!" I said, as I plugged my phone in and began to pack strategically. If my bag was too heavy, then it would slow me down. But if it was too light, then I would be like a noodle, harder to control, and struggling to stop. Here goes nothing...
