Chapter 2: Settle In.

Start from the beginning

Her backpack was later on empty, she brought along an old toothbrush and a hairbrush she found one time with her mother. Under her pillow was a photo of her and her family, it was taken a few months before this all began. The smiles on their faces were bright and big, they looked very much alive and happy - not how everyone has become nowadays.

"Beth, we need your help on-" Rebecca looked up at the source of the voice. It was Carl, the young man she met before. He stopped mid sentence and a frown took over his beautiful face.

Carl's eyebrows were knitted together and his smile was upside down. "What are you doing in here?" He sneered rudely.

"This i-is my room." Rebecca stuttered and started to twiddle around with her fingers.

Carl glared at her and turned around, leaning over the rail. "Dad! Get up here!" He shouted down to his father.

Rebecca thought it was rude, the way talked to his father. He had no manners and a horrible attitude. Rick came in through the door and stood facing his son.

'His father is Rick? Wow...' She thought to herself.

"Your trusting this girl to sleep in the same room as Beth, what are you, crazy?" Carl said dramatically, getting all up in his fathers face.

Rick laughed and pat his sons shoulder, "She's harmless, calm down kido."

This ignited the flame in Carls raging body. "Dad, don't you understand! She can attack her at any moment, you said it yourself yesterday, 'We can't afford to lose any more people'."

"Having a new member is what we need. Carl, I know this is hard but just bare with me, we're doing the right thing." Rick said slowly, he didn't want to upset or anger Carl any more then he already was.

Carl glanced at Rebecca for a short second, "This is a mistake." He snapped and stormed off, ignoring Ricks call, "Carl get back here and apologise!"

Rebecca rolled her eyes, what did Carl know? Nothing, he didn't know anything about her so who was he to jump to conclusions. Anger bubbled up inside her, she was a nice person! The last thought inside her head would be to attack a walker, let alone a human being. She was going to be strong and confront Carl when he was rude to her, not hideaway and let his words affect her.

"Sorry about my son, a lots been happening these past few months. He'll warm up to you, just...give him time." Rick breaks the silence and sends a smile her way. "We will all be settling down for tea soon, come outside when your finished." He said and made his way downstairs to prepare food.

There wasn't much food to choose from once Rebecca made it outside. Everyone was already chomping down theirs and having loud conversations with each other. Walkers could be heard from all around but there was no way for them to pass the large wired fence that surrounded the Museum unless someone opened the gates latch from inside the walls.

In the middle of the empty parking lot a camp fire was lit up-that's where everyone was seated, on thin blankets and cushions that separated their butts from the cold gravel beneath them. Rebecca waited patiently till her frog legs where done getting cooked by Daryl. Cookie was in her arms, wagging his tail at the smell of food.

"Here." Daryl shoved Rebecca's food in her face fairly roughly. She thanked him and took a step towards the museum, where she would go back to her room and eat there quietly.

"Hey," Daryl grabbed her arm, "where do you think your going? Everyone's that way." He said, pointing at the group.

"Well, I was thinking about going back up to eat in my room with Cookie." Rebecca mumbled.

Daryl laughed, "I don't think so. Start being social young lady." He joked, "We haven't scared you already have we?"

She forced a laugh, no matter how much she wanted to shout and him to let go of her arm and allow her to go to her room she stayed silent and shook her head. "Well, go on." He urged and gave Cookie a pat on the head who was beside her leg, following her every move.

The wind outside picked up and Rebecca's hair flew all over the place, in her face and in her mouth. She held her frog legs tightly in her free hands which were on top of a napkin-lookalike paper.

As she got closer to the group, it turned out that they were all in one huge discussion. To herself, it seemed like she was intruding so as she kept herself walking very slowly towards them Cookie ran off to them and started trying to beg for food. He did in fact receive some part of a squirrel by a women, Rebecca didn't yet know of.

"Cookie! Get back here." She whispered loudly, in this situation she wanted to draw as little attention to herself as possible, but no, she couldn't have that could she.

"There she is! The newest member of the group." Michonne gestured her hand to Rebecca, all eyes landed on her and she suddenly felt self conscious. "Rebecca, come over here and take a seat."

Rebecca wanted to say no badly but with all eyes on her I'm sure everyone expected her to say yes. "S-Sure."

Michonne patted on a small space of blanket to her right where she wanted Rebecca to sit. Rebecca would have been fine with it if Carl wasn't there, sitting beside the spot Michonne was flattening down.

' This could be a great way to try and sort things out with him. Tell him about you and show him you are not what he says you are. ' Rebecca's conscience reminds her.

That was perfect! She mentally thanked it for leading her in the right direction and she gracefully took as seat down between Michonne and Carl.

The frog legs in Rebecca's hands smelt delicious. She put it in her mouth and then drew it back, pulling all of the meat off it. She moaned in satisfaction.

By then Cookie came back to her and sat in between her legs, looking up at her with his adorable chocolate brown eyes. "Here boy." She smiled and handed him a leg in which he hungrily took and started to devour.

A little tap on Rebecca's shoulder made her turn her attention off from Cookie and onto Michonne. "I just wanted to apologise for my actions before, I shouldn't have put my katana at your neck without getting to know you first." She said.

Rebecca smiled and nodded, "It's ok, and I forgive you. If I was in your position I would have done that too." She lied, she would never put a sword to someone's neck, she most likely would have ran or hidden behind something.

Michonne's face brightened, "Thank you."

Whilst Michonne started talking to some other people Rebecca turned towards Carl, who sat there playing with the remainder of his food. He could feel Rebecca's stare on him but he pushed it to the back of his mind and ignored her.

"Hi." She said, biting her lip. She thought Carl would reply and say hi back but she was wrong. He didn't look up or even acknowledge her existence. That hurt, she didn't understand how he could hate her so much when they hadn't even properly introduced themselves to each other. "My name's Rebecca, what's yours?" She tried again.

No response-"Carl." He said in a bored tone before shooting up from off of his blanket and back inside.

'I'm not giving up on you, Carl.'

"Hey Carl! Wait up!"
