you tuck me in
and roll in beside me,
our legs tangling together under the warmth of the blankets.
and maybe that's why i don't mind,
that the smell of your breath on my neck,
is a mixture of peppermint and alcohol
as your addiction can't be hidden with toothpaste.
"allison," you whisper in the dark, "are you okay?"
that's why i tell you.
simply because you asked;
like asking is a synonym for caring
and now i know you care.
"no," i say,
"i was talking to dad today. he's coming home."
