I wake up in a verdant field. Trees are in every direction I look. I'm alone. What happened? Did I collapse? I have the distinct memory of falling but there are no trees around me I could have fallen from. Was I on a horse? Did I fall off the horse? No, there was no horse. I stand up from the ground, wiping the green stains that now cover the legs of my white jeans. Why would I wear white jeans in the woods? As I look to the ground there is a dent in the grass, a dent the size of my own body. I must have been here for a while. As I look around the clearing I spot no other signs of life, a chilly wind sweeps the area, sending leaves off trees, cascading into the green ground. The hairs on my arms stand from the cool breeze, instinctively I wrap my arms around myself, rubbing them from my shoulder to my elbow. I start walking towards the trees hoping to find a path or another human being.
I decide to start calling out into the forest, only hearing echos of my own voice reaching my ears. "Hello!" I scream. No answer. Not even the chirp of a bird or the rustle of an animal running through the bushes. "Is there anyone here?"
"Hello?" I spin in the direction of the voice. It was female as far as I could tell, unless it was a man with the voice of a sixteen year old girl. Or what I believe to be the voice of a sixteen year old girl.
There she was, sitting at the foot of a tree, her short blond bob, waving in the wind. She looked at me startled like she has never met another human being before, she too is wearing inappropriate clothes for "hanging out" in the forest.
I walk towards her but she only backs further towards the tree. "It's okay, I'm not going to hurt you. I'm August, August Reynolds. Who are you?" I kept my distance, not wanting the only person I have met here to run away.
It was silent for a while. It was getting colder by the second, I could feel my toes getting more numb each excruciating second I waited. I really wish I had a jacket. "I'm Georgia, Georgia Lyman." She's British. I didn't notice when she said hello. But now it's clear as day. Was I abducted by aliens and left in England?
"Your English?" It wasn't meant to be a question, she obviously was but I'm so confused.
"Your American." This wasn't a question. She didn't sound impressed either. "How did you tell I was English, was it the accent?" Sarcasm, I can give it out but not take it in.
"Ha, funny. Where are we?" I'm fed up. I know it's only been two minutes since we have met but I already despise her.
She looked startled all of a sudden, it was so quick though I didn't know if I had imagined it. "What do you mean, where are we? You don't know how you got here either?" She was hyperventilating now, her body was shaking even more than before. She dropped to the ground.
Unconscious. I got my answer when she dropped to the ground, she doesn't know where she is, or how she got here either.
I pulled Georgia up against the tree, letting her head fall on my shoulder. We sat there for ages, an hour maybe two. Georgia has woke up, long ago. I had told her about how we were in the same situation. We are walking, through the forest, looking for the spot Georgia first woke up. When we get to the creek, we see a body lying at the opposite side. Slowly I walk closer to the girl, lying in the dirt by the water, all the while ignoring Georgia's protests for me to "not get closer".
As I get closer I can see the slight rise and fall of her chest. I let out a breath of relief. She's alive. I don't know what I would have done if I had found a dead body in these woods. It wouldn't be a good sign for my likelihood of survival.
Once I crossed the slippery rock I reach a hand out towards her, her arm jerked away as I touched her and she sprung up into a sitting position. She started backing away from me.
"Woah, woah, woah, it's okay, we're not going to hurt you, look I'll stay back here." I backed further away, stepping on a slippery rock and almost losing my footing but I still backed away.
"Where am I? Wait, no, who are you?" The unknown girl, waved her fingers at us, her voice was wobbly and she was shaking from the cold air. I hadn't noticed until I look around but it was already dark, only light from the moon was letting us see.
"I'm August, this is Georgia." My mum always used to tell me, ripping off the band aid makes the pain last for a shorter period of time. " and we don't know where we are. Like you, we woke up in this forest, except you were in the same place Georgia first woke up."
The girl looked from me to Georgia and then started to examine her dirt covered clothes. "Where did you wake up?" I turn back to the girl only to see her finger pointing straight at me.
"At a clearing, a half hour north from here." She shook her head, trying to take it all in. We sat in silence for a while letting this unknown girl, wrap her mind around what we just told her. While she was getting her head around that, my head wandered around in its own world.
What if there is someone else where I woke up? How many of us are there? Will we ever get home? Will I ever see my family again? Or my friends?
What is going on?
