Q: What happens when an author who is feeling rather creative has a very isolated lunch hour?

A : This

Grab a paper

Take some notes

Listen very well

To tips and tricks and common sense

This poem’s about to tell

Writing is an art form

Like paintings of a prose

Planting seeds of magic words

That blossom into rose

It’s time to learn a few things

Simple stuff to do and say

Tips that ensure your written words

Are the best they’ll be today

Spelling is essential

Don’t sound like a jerk

Dis and dat and realz

Make your reader have to work

Maybe while you chew on that

Learn to type it through

Spell the word: it doesn’t hurt

Unless u r 2 lazy 2

Easy on those adverbs

Words that end in L.Y.

They’re sneaky little suckers

Who like to multiply

Go in there and slay them

They make your story weak

You’re better off without them

You’ll have less things to tweak

Crutch words and descriptors

Less is often more

In revisions they will haunt you

Not easy to ignore

While we’re talking crutches

Learn to not repeat

We get that his eyes blaze hot

And she likes to stare at feet

Learn the proper usage

Of there and their and they’re

Maybe while you’re at it

Check out where and wear

Dialogue is stellar

Just learn to be precise,

‘Said’ is the most common

But there’s groaned, and asked and griped

As long as you remember

Not to be so daft

This little ditty I just wrote

Will help with your first draft
