My head snapped to the right. The scream came from that direction. I looked to the group of men. They nodded and I watched as Koi took of into the woods. I ran after, knowing that he would get there before I did. My mind was racing, thinking about what could possibly be wrong. Did Pishuni find the reserve? Was he here? Just thinking about it made my legs work  overtime. I lept gracefully over a log and then ducked under a tree.

I came to the edge of the reserve and saw Koi locked in battle with a man. I could see a gun laying a few feet away and a women sitting on the ground holding a boy, his shoulder a bloody mess. He didn't appear to be conscious.

"Why did you shoot him?" I heard Koi yell at the man. Koi swung his leg out hitting the man's ankles and effectively knocking him off his feet. He jumped on top of the man, straddling his waist and holding his hands above his head.

"I didn't mean to! I thought he was a deer!" Koi slapped him in the face.

"I should kill you right now. Give me one good reason why I shouldn't." Koi spat in the hunters face.

I walked up behind him and laid my hand on his shoulder. "Enough Koi. It was an accident." He slapped the hunter again and then reluctantly got off. The hunter took off running into the woods. He didn't even bring his gun.

The boy who was shot was named Alo. He was only 13 moons. The girl, Zonta was his sister. She was 15 moons. I carried Alo back to the healer. When Opa saw the boy she immediately started telling us what to do. She laid out a mat and I set him down. She told Zonta to leave because there would be much blood. Then she asked me to get some water from the pot by the fire. I grabbed it quickly and ran back to her teepee.

She pored the water over the wound. "Just as I thought. The bullet is still there." I watched as she grabbed a small knife. She started to cut an X shape over the bullet hole. I winced as more blood pooled from the cuts. She cleaned them then grabbed two thin sticks. She stuck then in the wound and used them to slide the bullet out. She poured more water on the poor boys shoulder then stood. "Grab me some cloth from that corner." I got some and brought it back to her. I watched as she ripped the cloth into strips and soaked them in some kind of ointment, then she skillfully dressed the would.

"There. He should be fine, just slightly sore. Tell Zonta that his wound needs to be redressed every night. Give her this basket of supplies." I took the basket and brought it to Zonta. Then I went inside and carefully picked up Alo's body. I followed her to her hut and laid him inside.

Ever since the incident with the hunter the day before, Koi has been oddly quiet. I couldn't quite figure out why. Maybe it was because Alo still hadn't woken up. Or maybe it was because I was starting school today.

It's my  first time wearing jeans, a t-shirt, socks and something called 'running shoes'. The school wasn't far so instead of riding a bus, I ran there. The school was nothing special, a really boring place actually. It was a large brick building surrounded by grass and teenagers. I was walking up to the front doors when something hit my back.

I felt someone gripping my arm. I turned and looked down. A small blonde boy was gripping my arm His eyes trained on something across the lawn. "Help! He's gonna kill me!" He released his grip on my arm and ran behind my back. I could see a guy, much larger than the boy, making his way across the lawn.

"Let me at him!" He growled at me.

"No." I said stubbornly. Why was I shielding a boy I didn't know?
