And that scared her.
(Y/n), Steven, Greg, Ruby, and Sapphire are all sitting at a table, Steven playing with a spoon, Greg whistling awkwardly, Ruby leaning on the table- facing away from Sapphire, and (Y/n) looking out the window.
A waitress comes over and gives everyone their plate of food.
Two sunny-side up eggs, a crispy bacon smile and a strawberry nose.
“Thank you.” Greg, Steven, and (Y/n) said- smiling at the waitress.
Steven and (Y/n) begin cutting into their food, but Greg frowns when Sapphire ignores her plate and Ruby glares at hers.
“What’s the matter? Not hungry?” Greg asked.
“Gems don’t need to eat, Dad.” Steven told him.
“Garnet likes to eat sometimes.” Greg said, Ruby clicks her tongue.
“Argh! Well Garnet isn't here!” Ruby shouts as she throws herself against the booth seat, crossing her arms, wiggling her foot impatiently.
“Mmm… Oh boy, this really is the best diner in the world, huh?” Greg asked, trying to lighten the awkward mood that had formed. Ruby starts shaking the table, plates rattling and drinks spilling a bit.
“You’re shaking the table.” Sapphire said.
“Oh! I’m kinda surprised you feel anything at all- to be honest.”
“I didn’t need to feel, I saw.” Sapphire sassed back.
“Everything is just so… crystal- clear- to- you- ISN’T IT?!” Ruby said, shaking the table more- causing Steven and Greg to grab their plates and hold them above the table. (Y/n) however, drops their fork and knife.
“This will pass- she’ll burn herself out.” Sapphire said.
“That’s what you think! I am an eternal flame, baby!” Ruby shouts as she summons her gauntlet, smashing the table- flipping it and everything flying off of it. Steven and Greg holding their food- (Y/n) frowning at the two gems. For being a few thousand years- they were acting like children.
Ruby and Sapphire start arguing with each other, Greg trying to reassure his kids that they’ll get the food to go. However, (Y/n) looks over to Steven and they’re heart breaks at the look of frustration on his face. Looking over to the gems they were about to tell them to stop, but Steven beat them to it. By dropping his plate on the floor, breaking it and grabbing everyone’s attention. (Y/n) and Greg sighed.
Steven walks out of the diner, leaving two stunned gems. Before they could get up and run to him, (Y/n) stood up and stood in front of them- blocking their view of the young boy.
The gems look up at them and they both freeze as they look back at them with narrowed eyes filled with disappointment and a bit of anger.
“Stay here. I’ll go talk to him.” (Y/n) said as they walked out without waiting for a response.
“Speak your mind.” (Y/n) said as they stood a foot away from them. Steven without turning around lets out a heavy sigh.
“I was so happy… when Garnet said she was gonna come on this trip with us. Home’s been awful! Here’s been awful!” Steven said as he turned around and gestured towards the diner. “I thought they wanted to have a fun time, but everyone’s been acting awful too! It- it just came with us! I don’t understand… is it… is it me?” Steven asked, disappointed at the possible conclusion.
“Absolutely not.” (Y/n) said, kneeling down on one knee and holding Steven’s shoulders in their hands. Wiping away the small tears that formed in his eyes. “It’s not your fault, none of this is… I know it’s hard not to feel like it’s not- trust me. With everything happening with mom’s past and new problems happening- it can be a lot. But not for one moment, do you think it’s your fault.” (Y/n) said, lifting up Steven’s chin as he looks down from them.
“... they’re grown gems. If they wanna act like children- then let them. They have to know that what they do has consequences. We can’t be there to fix everything. So don’t think that everything falls on your shoulders. Okay?” (Y/n) said, trying to get Steven to meet their eyes. Steven sniffs and nods. “I'll be here to share the load- so don’t hold in your feelings okay?” Steven smiles and hugs their sibling. Grateful for the new found relief. The relief of knowing that he wasn’t going through this alone and that he wasn’t alone.
“We made him feel… like it was his fault.” Sapphire said, her voice cracking a bit. (Y/n) and Steven pull away from the hug and look behind (Y/n). To see Sapphire and Ruby standing a few feet away from them, hearing the conversion they had.
“I keep looking into the future, when all of this has already been solved- as if it doesn’t matter how you feel in the present.” Sapphire sobs. “No wonder you think I don’t care!” She cries.
“Sapphire… no, no no no no no! This is all my fault! I-I didn’t want to look for a solution, I-I just wanted to be mad! You’re right! You’re always right! I was being stupid!” Ruby said, trying to make her love feel better. Sapphire scoffed.
“I don’t think you’re stupid!” She frowns, mad at Rudy for calling herself that.
“I’m… sorry.” Ruby said as she brushed her white hair away from her eye.
“You honestly think I;m not upset about what happened? I was just… trying to do the right thing…” Sapphire said. Looking over to (Y/n) and Steven.
“I know…” Ruby said, smiling at Sapphire. “You know what’s nice about being split up?” She asked.
“What?” Sapphire asked, looking concerned.
“I get to look at you.” Ruby smirks causing Sapphire to shove her away and giggle.
The two gems laugh together and Ruby kisses her cheek and neck.
(Y/n) makes a gagging face and covers Steven’s eyes as he blushes and lays on the ground- sighing.
“Everything will be okay, right?” Steven asked, (Y/n) let out a puff of air and leaned their arms on their knees.
“Yeah… cause we have each other.” (Y/n) shoves Stevens leg lightly, making him smile.
Getting their free ice after Ruby and Sapphire fuse into Garnet again, the ride home was more pleasant.
“We’re home!” Steven shouted as they walked inside their beach house. Garnet with filled ice bags on each of her shoulders. Amethyst was comforting Pearl on the couch as they walked in.
“Oh! Uh- You look like you all had fun.” Pearl smiled.
“Yeah it all worked out!” Steven said, nudging (Y/n)’s side. They smiled.
“Garnet, how are you?” Pearl asked.
Garnet holds up her hand at Pearl. “Not now.” Walking away. (Y/n) sighed but smiled, it was a start.
“She’s speaking to me again… kind of.” Pearl smiles, happy for anything then her just ignoring her.
“That really was a great trip.” Greg said, glad to see them somewhat working it out.
“Can we go back?” Steven asked. Greg’s shoulders drop at the thought of returning to that diner again.
