“No, please continue.” Amethyst said.
“Well I gotta drive over to the next state, keystone.” Greg said.
“You mean the Keystone state?” Pearl asked.
“Right, the state named Keystone. I met a guy on an internet message board who's selling car wash brushes for real cheap! I just gotta meet him in Keystone and pick em' up!” Greg said, as he looked over to his kids.
“I don’t like those brushes, they feel weird on your fur.” Steven grimaced.
“Well, do you like motels?” Greg asked.
“Probably!” Steven shrugged.
“So what do you two say? Wanna stay at a motel with your favorite dad?” Greg asked.
“I wouldn’t say you're my favorite.” (Y/n) teased, Steven nodded in agreement.
“What? Huh… oh, you kidders! Come here!” Greg chuckled as he ruffled (Y/n)’s hair and locked Steven in a headlock.
“I can’t wait to get room service!” Steven smiled.
“That’s a hotel, Steven. A motel has a pool, free ice and if it’s the motel I think it is, then it’s right next to the best diner in the world.” (Y/n) said, smiling at the smiling breakfast plate she had years ago.
“You remember?” Greg smiled, (Y/n) nods. Garnet walks up to them.
“I’m coming too.” Garnet said.
“What?” Greg questioned.
“Even better!” Steven shouted.
The next day the four of them drove to Keystone, Steven and Greg up front while Garnet and (Y/n) stayed in the back seats. Passing by fields of grass and small towns, before the group knew it, they made it to the motel. Greg parks his van and he opens the door to their room.
“Another great thing about motels,” Gerg began as he unlocked their room for the night. “You can drive right up to your door!” Steven gasps in awe as they look at an ordinary motel room, nothing special.
“I’m gonna swim in the pool, order a movie, get free ice! It’s gonna be great!” Steven shouts as he jumps on one of the shared beds.
“Not before we check for bed bugs!” Greg rushes past Garnet and (Y/n), who were standing in front of the doorway. Greg gives the okay and the others place their luggage on the floor, just as Greg's phone lights up- signaling that he had to go get the brushes. Leaving the three alone in the room. Just as he leaves, Garnet takes a seat on the bed Steven and (Y/n) are sitting on, her fists shaking on her lap as she mumbles to herself.
“Calm down.” Garnet groans as her hands come up to her opposite shoulders, pushing herself away from herself.
“I don’t feel like forgiving Pearl!” Garnet shouts.
“You don’t understand, we must.” Garnet said, having a conversion with herself.
“If you’re not going to listen then you can just…. Go!” Garnet glows out pops Ruby and Sapphire.
“We must move past this, Ruby.” Sapphire said as she faced away from her partner.
“She lied to us so we’d form Sardonyx! She tricked us; don’t you feel used?” Ruby asked as she paced back and forth.
“Ruby! Sapphire!Uh-” Steven began but stopped when (Y/n) covered his mouth. He looks over to them and they shake their head at their little brother.
“You’re choosing to take it personally.” Sapphire sighed.
“It’s fusion! What’s more personal than that?!” Ruby asked.
“Just let them talk it out. Okay?” (Y/n) said as they pulled Steven to their side. He lets them, but continues to watch uncomfortably.
“I know you’re still upset.” Sapphire said.
“Oh, so it’s just me?” Ruby asked.
“Of course not, can’t you see I’m completely engulfed with rage.” Sapphire said, her voice monotone and face expressionless.
“Well, it doesn’t feel like it.” Ruby begins to tap her foot impatiently.
“The sooner we forgive Pearl, the better it will be for all of us.” Sapphire said as she levitated from the floor to the foot of the bed.
“You’re… ugh! Not as above this as you think you are!” Ruby shouted. Her little feet began burning holes into the cheap carpet of the room.
“Yes, I am. Ruby the carpet.” Sapphire pointed out, Ruby gasped and ran out the room- slamming the door behind her.
“Nice to… see you again?” Steven greeted.
“Nice to see you, too.” Sapphire nodded.
“You’re not gonna come?” Steven asked (Y/n) as he came out of the bathroom in his swim trunks. (Y/n) shook their head.
“You have fun, I’m gonna catch up on some reading.” (Y/n) said as they waved a book in their hands from their luggage. Steven smiles and walks out the door as (Y/n) took a seat at the head of their bed while Sapphire stayed at the foot of the bed. The silence over the space they were in, but after a minute, (Y/n) noticed some light frost forming on the pages of their book. Then their breath fogged in the air as they let out a sigh.
“Something on your mind?” Sapphire asked. (Y/n) closed their book and moved to sit next to the small gem.
“Nope, but I know something’s on your mind.” They said, Sapphire didn’t respond so (Y/n) took it as a chance to continue. “I understand you wanna be the bigger person- but your feelings matter. Bottling this kind of rage- or whatever feeling, up isn’t good. It’ll overflow at the worst possible time and while everyone else moved on, you didn’t.” (Y/n) gently flicked off some ice forming at the base of Sapphire’s dress.
“Are you telling me to confort Pearl?” She asked, they shrugged.
“Do you want to?” (Y/n) asked.
Sapphire didn’t say anything as the room slowly began frosting over.
“I’m telling you to face the issue, don’t ignore it.” (Y/n) said.
“When did you grow up?” Sapphire asked, recalling the time she would tell them something as wise when they were in stress, but now the roles had revered.
“Honestly… it’s all been kinda a blur.” (Y/n) sighed.
