"I was just saying how we should work on our project after school? If you're cool to... you know... hang?"

"Uh huh, sure," he agreed, still half there.

You smiled and bit your bottom lip slightly.

It was at that moment that the person you despised most in life walked into the room. She had disliked you immediately, and because she seemed to rule over the school, made everyone else have a slight dislike towards you as well. She had this effect on people. In every group, even one of children, the one who can place themselves at the top reins. The rush of hormones helped the situation as well.

Vince's eyes snapped up upon her arrival and watched her intently as she practically strutted into the room.

"May!" his lips spoke her name enthusiastically, pulling them into a smile. May winked at him and lightly brushed her hand across his shoulder as she passed the two of you.

"May," you spoke in a whisper, conflicted wither to be scared or angry. Nothing ever went right for you in her presence. Your heart sighed in disappointment as you saw her as everything you weren't. You looked around at all the starstruck boys in utter confusion. She made them crazy. How?

"So... I'll see you then?" You tried to ask Vince, but he still seemed to be focused on something... or rather someone... else. "Sounds like a plan then," you spoke mostly to yourself.

After school you and Vince sat in one of the class rooms to work on the project as discussed earlier. You watched him as he listened to music while writing stuff down and found yourself blushing. Quickly trying to focus, you instead looked down at your hands in order to work harder.

Vince pulled out his earbuds and yawned slightly, causing your attention to snap back immediately. He put down his pencil to pick up his phone. He seemed to be texting someone, and a smile played on his face as he looked at the messages.

You cleared your throat, wanting to capture the attention of your friend.

"So we haven't talked a whole lot lately, what have you been up to Vince?"

He didn't even look up.

"Hmm? Me? Oh, not much."

"Oh. OK."

You felt stupid and dumb. Your hands were clammy. Looking at his handsome features, you suddenly felt the intense need to tell him your feelings. You were nervous, but your hyperactive younger brain was now fixated on letting your heart spill and wouldn't let you leave until you did.

He was so nice, so nice to the point where you were sure he wouldn't mistreat you even if he didn't feel the same way. Curse your young, dumb, and stupidly brave heart.

"Vince," you called out suddenly, feeling the pressure build up inside you. He looked up from his phone to stare at you, smiling slightly. But... his eyes seemed to be looking past you.

His smile made your heart melt nonetheless.

"I... I really think you're... well, I-"

A gasp from behind made you freeze. You clenched your eyes shut and willed it to not be so.

"(Y/N)... are you confessing to Vince?!" Came May's haunting voice from behind. It made your blood run cold.

Your eyes opened to see Vince staring at you with wide eyes. You now realized he hadn't been smiling at you, but rather who had just walked in behind you.

"I-I," you stammered, feeling the thick and threateningly unsettling air.

"I know you weren't... because he's my boyfriend," she hissed, placing her hands on your shoulders as to dig her nails into your flesh. You looked up at Vice as if pleading him to tell you it wasn't true and to help you.

You couldn't believe what you saw.

He started at you expressionless with slightly hateful eyes.

"Really? In front of my girlfriend? I thought we were friends," he spoke lowly, causing a shiver of fear to tickle your nerves and your heart to break. You found yourself shoved to the ground by May and whimpered when you collided. "Don't worry, we aren't anything. I should have listened to you babe. She is bad news."

It wasn't the fall that hurt.

It was your supposed friend walking away with your enemy without even bothering to help you up that ached the most. And you sobbed.

~~~
Ever since that day your life had gotten worse and worse. May used to simply dislike you, but now she hated you with all she had. She told everyone how you were a boyfriend stealer and a terrible person, causing practical abuse to be thrown on you.
You always came home with bruises. Sometimes from people you didn't even know. And Vince? He watched it all with amused eyes, completely entranced and persuaded by his hot girlfriend that you were manipulative and pure evil.
The world felt heavy and against you as it seemed the whole school threw everything they had at you.
You cried many nights of the first few months, but now you were past it. You were emotionless, unswayed, and dead. You avoided human contact in all ways necessary and had no personal relations outside your family.
He had broken you, she had ruined you, and the rest abused you.
Trust wasn't something you would ever easily give away again, and friends were a joke. It went on this way for two years, time allowing the wounds to stop bleeding but leaving scars on your mind and heart that couldn't be easily mended.
And then, you met him.
